Hi, my name is Becka and this is my First character. I found this site through a directory. Something you should know about me is I love rp'ing!!.
Canon: RENT
Custom Title: The Filmmaker Cannot See.
PHYSICAL
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Appearance: Mark looks like your typical vagabond filmmaker: painfully thin due to lack of food (though he was actually pretty scrawny his whole life), a vampire tan, spiky, light blond hair and thick, square glasses.
Height: 5'8''
Body: Scrawny, pale, and bony. You'll find no flab on Mark, but you wont find any muscle either!
Other distinguishing features:
Wardrobe: When it comes to looks, Mark is a very clean-cut person. He tries not to wear anything too baggy or torn, though his signature scarf is, as some would say, "well-loved". His clothing choices may be slightly dated, but really, who's isn't nowadays?[/ul]
Play By: Anthony Rapp
PERSONALITY
General personality: Mark his very well-known around Avenue B for his dorkiness, intelligence, wit, and mother-hen-like concern when it comes to his friends.
Even as a little boy, he was always a very observant and generous person. Of course, his shyness got in the way of him being generous to someone other than his mother.
One of the biggest flaws of Mark's personality is his ability to avoid dealing with the pain and conflict in his personal life by pouring himself into his work and hiding behind it. He refuses to admit that something is truly the matter until it is far too late. There's a lot about Mark that even his friends don't know about. He's always felt this mixture of isolation and desire to be a part of his friends' lives, but there is that one small insecurity that stops him: he's not sick or queer, so why would they accept him?
Quotes, frequently used expressions: Close on *insert persons name here.*
Likes:
Dislikes:
Strengths: Film-making, seeing things others don't, sticking by his friends
Weaknesses: His fear of being alone, Maureen, Roger
BACKGROUND
Family: His Mother still tries to keep in contact with him, as much as Mark doesn't want her to. He has a strained relationship with his Father, and he hardly ever talks to his sister, Cindy.
Date of Birth: January 23rd
Education: Graduated High School, and studied at NYU for two years before dropping out.
Occupation: He makes films!
Worst past experience: The day Maureen dumped him. He really loved her, and she just tore his heart out.
Best past experience: The day he met Roger (cheesy, I know).
Image: Mark is viewed by everyone as the sensitive albino nerd that anyone can go to when they have a problem.
History: Mark was born into the stable, painfully happy home of Mike and Judy Cohen. He was the couple's second born, and was always put below his sister, Cindy, by their Father, but was constantly placed on a pedestal by their Mother, as much as he didn't want to be. He was her little Marky (a nickname that would haunt him in the years to come).
During his early schooling years, Mark always isolated himself from the other children, playing by himself, eating alone, only answering a question when the teacher asked him to. What no one realized was that Mark was actually studying the other children, trying to assess when would be the best time to approach one of them.
However, once he hit the seventh grade, it wasn't Mark who approached someone; it was the other way around. Now I won't go into the boring details, but the person that approached him was Roger Davis (Mark's future bff). Mark always wondered why Roger decided that they were supposed to be friends- after all, they were polar opposites- but he never asked questions. There was something that just clicked.
Once Mark graduated high school, he and the rest of his friends (and his girlfriend!) packed up their bags and moved to New York City, where Mark attended NYU to study film, his passion. But just two years into the program, he had to drop out, due to rising tuition fees and the utter lack of inspiration. It was just to "inside the box" for his taste.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
“January 12th, 11:34 AM,” Mark announced to the camera as he held it out of the window of the apartment, capturing the cars and civilians walking by below. There wasn’t anything particularly exciting going on, but oh well. He figured he had to get some boring footage if he wanted his documentary to be realistic. He spun the camera around to pan across the empty loft.
"If you can't tell already, this place has been like this for the last two days." Mark stated, zooming in on the dirty coffee cups on the table that no one had bothered to clean up, "Collins is grading some papers, Maureen and Joanne are at couples counseling--" He smiled slightly, "--and Mimi and Roger? Well, they're on the floor below me, but I don't think they're really dressed for company right now." Mark's face scrunched up in disgust beneath his light blond hair.
Being that he was the only one here at the moment, the Loft seemed to lack in the natural build-up of junk and long-unused possessions. Granted, all of his thing's were still scattered around; A film projector claimed the back right corner, while a bookshelf took up the wall space next to it. As opposed to books, however, tapes containing numerous home movies were stacked on its shelves. A few of the Well Hungarians sample tapes were also jammed in carelessly. His messenger bag was resting lazily on the couch, right next to the Fender.
Then, ever so slowly, Mark lowered his camera down to the floor and let out a weary sigh- whether it was out of self-pity, he did not know.
He'd been totally alone for the last two days, and it was really starting to bug him. He missed Roger staying up for him because of late filming. He missed them all complaining to him about Buzzline. Hell, he even missed the ‘Mark's not getting any’ jokes.
A horrible tightness entered his chest, and a lump of panic rose up in his throat. It's going to be like this when they're all gone, he realized sadly. Mark could never deal well with being alone, and the fact that he knew that most of his friends were slowly dying around him just made that realization ten times worse.
He had no idea how much longer he could deal with this, and it was slowly killing him on the inside.
Yeah, poor you. A snide voice in the back of his mind said, Always hiding behind your camera, scared of confrontation. So lonely. Still head over heels for the girl who never really loved you. Dying. That's right, Cohen, your dying.
