Lady Catherine de Bourgh was taking a break from her hectic schedule of shopping, getting her hair done and having yet another manicure (one of her nails had chipped, and that simply would not do) to have a bite of lunch.
For most people this would consist of popping into the nearest cafe, eating something quickly and going on their merry way once again. But Lady Catherine was not one of those people. For her, even a light lunch had to be perfect.
Which was why, instead of going to a small cafe or even a restaurant, she had opted for a fancy hotel restaurant instead. Only the best for Her Ladyship.
The hotel she'd decided upon was one of the poshest in Manhattan...anything less would have, no doubt, been a great ordeal. Laden as she was with a ridiculous amount of shopping bags she was eager to sit down, and yet this hotel was one of those places where a 'Please Wait To Be Seated' sign was in order.
Hmmph.
Lady Catherine ignored the sign, figuring it didn't matter since the place wasn't exactly crowded, and made her way towards a table set for two near the window. She dumped her shopping bags on the chair opposite her and sat down, drumming her newly manicured nails on the tabletop as she waited to be served.

_______________________________________________________________________________S O P R E T T Y, S O S M A R T what a waste of a young heart_______________________________________________________________________________ Jane stood in the staff lounge, poised in front of the mirror. She was having difficulty with the bow of her apron, which fit snugly where it lay slung across her hips. Her uniform, a flirty white shirt with a black pencil skirt, was ruined by the little apron, but it was required, so she wore it. Best to play by the rules, she found. The rules also included having your hair out of your face, so Jane had pulled hers into an immaculate ponytail with gentle curls.
She turned three quarters of the way around so that she could see the back of her uniform to tie the troublesome bow. Finally she got it to hang just right, and she headed out to start her shift. This was the nicest restaurant in the city, and she wanted to look the part.
Jane walked into the dining room just in time to see an older gentlewoman walking directly and purposely past the "Please Wait to Be Seated" sign. The lady was vaguely familiar- Jane seemed to recall a late-night visit to her sister Elizabeth from this woman. Lady Catherine de Bourgh- was that her name? Jane seemed to recall that being correct. She started toward the Lady.
"Madame," Jane said softly, not desiring to cause a scene. "Madame, you must wait to be taken to a table. A hostess will be with you shortly, if you would just wait here in the foyer." Jane gestured to the grand foyer, with its frescoed walls and gold leaf ceiling. "I do apologize for the wait, but we are short staffed this afternoon." Jane offered an apologetic smile and pulled out a chair for Lady Catherine.

At length Lady Catherine noticed a young woman approach her table; dressed impeccably, apron and all. Her Ladyship smiled; at last some service.
However, as the woman spoke, Lady Catherine's smile faded. This young lady obviously hadn't the faintest clue who she was...madame indeed! Not to mention asked her to move! Huh! Lady Catherine had to admit, she was shocked and astonished, and decided, as was her wont, to make her sentiments rather loudly known.
"Young lady, do you have any idea who I am? I refuse to be moved from this seat, nor do I expect to wait! I have waited here long enough!"
Long enough being all of five minutes.
"If you would be so kind as to take my order...I assume that is what you're here to do after all."

_______________________________________________________________________________S O P R E T T Y, S O S M A R T what a waste of a young heart_______________________________________________________________________________ Oh, here we go, Jane thought to herself. One of THOSE clients.
"Madame, I'm afraid I am not familiar with you. My name is Jane, though, and I would be very happy to take your order. Can I bring you a glass of water? Perhaps a wine menu?" Jane didn't want to hold this woman's awful manners against her- perhaps she was just having a bad day. Somehow, Jane doubted that this was the case, but she wasn't one to judge people based on first impressions, so she aimed to be as pleasant as possible.
"I do apologize for the wait," she said as she straightened up the table for the older woman. Impeccable service, clearly, would be required, and Jane still would not expect a tip of any significance. "May I bring you a menu, or do you already know what you would like this afternoon?" Jane offered her most endearing smile, hoping that she could perhaps make this woman's stay at the restaurant a pleasant one.

"Madame, I'm afraid I am not familiar with you. My name is Jane, though, and I would be very happy to take your order. Can I bring you a glass of water? Perhaps a wine menu?"
Lady Catherine hardly paid any attention to what this Jane girl had said after she mentioned not knowing who she was, and in such a casual manner too! Her Ladyship was tempted to stand up again and walk right out of the hotel (and she probably would have done too) had she not reasoned that she was hungry and, as impertinent as this young lady was, she was offering to serve her.
Lips thin with repressed verbal abuse, Lady Catherine returned her attention to what Jane was saying.
"I do apologize for the wait...May I bring you a menu, or do you already know what you would like this afternoon?"
"Hmmph," Her Ladyship replied, in a tone that clearly indicated just how seriously displeased she was with the whole affair. "I would like a glass of water and a menu if you would be so kind...how on Earth am I meant to know what I wish to eat if I have never been here before?"
