Hi, my name is Sasha and this is my first character. I found this site through Hamlet/Mimi. Something you should know about me is that I will steal your soul and eat it for breakfast.
Canon: Greco-Roman Mythology
Custom Title: The Queen of Tragedy
PHYSICAL
Age: Thirty-four.
Gender: Female.
Appearance: --
Height:5'8"
Body: Willowy figure.
Other distinguishing features: Elissa has a square jaw, pronounced cheekbones, and full lips.
Wardrobe: She chooses to dress in sombre colours as a form of mourning for the misfortunes which have crossed her path. There is a simple elegance about her style that doesn't look like much to the untrained eye. She's quite wealthy, and yet her clothing does not reflect that. However, she does have a thing for jewelry (especially pearls and diamonds). [/ul]
Play By: Cate Blanchett
PERSONALITY
General personality: Elissa is extremely reserved, creating walls around her that few can penetrate. Heartbreak has shut her down. She is pessimistic and aloof. Before tragedy struck, she was cheerful, loving, and carefree. On some level, she would like to go back to being the way she once was, but she feels that it is absolutely impossible. Her faith in the gods is completely destroyed, and she often feels victimized by everyone around her.
Quotes, frequently used expressions: "Now I know what love is."
Likes: (please list at least three)
Dislikes: (please list at least three)
Strengths: (please name three)
Weaknesses:(please name three)
BACKGROUND
Family: Both parents are dead. Her brother, Pygmalion, is in jail for murdering her first husband. Her sister, Anna, is the one person that she feels she can confide in without worrying about being betrayed.
Education: Homeschooling.
Occupation: None.
Worst past experience: Learning that her brother killed her first husband. Being left by her second husband.
Best past experience: Her first years with Sychaeus and her first years with Aeneas.
Image: Since moving to New York, the people she has met have seen her as aloof, reserved, and pessimistic. She cannot hold conversations for a long time, and that puts people off (especially because the Upper East Side is all about maintaining a positive image).
History:
Elissa "Dido" Purcell is the daughter of Senator Belus Purcell. Her mother died when she was young, shortly after her younger sister, Anna, was born. She grew up in Carthage, Maine, a secluded and forested town which is approximately an hour and a half away from Augusta. As a child, her father travelled frequently, leaving her with Anna and her older brother, Pygmalion (who was significantly older than the both of them). While he was supposed to be watching his younger sisters, Pygmalion often left to go out with friends. During their time home alone together, Elissa and Anna became extremely close and confided in each other about anything and everything. A tutor came to school them in Latin, English, History, Science, and Mathematics. It became apparent from an early age that Elissa was extremely bright, absorbing information at an alarming rate.
When Elissa was eighteen, Belus died of pneumonia. Her plans of attending university were immediately put on hold. Pygmalion was off doing God knew what, and she was left to watch Anna. Their father left them a large sum of money to keep them afloat. Until Anna was old enough to fend for herself, Elissa stayed in Carthage before moving to Portland, Maine when she was twenty five. There, she met Sychaeus Acerbas, a wealthy lawyer, four years her senior. He immediately took to calling her Dido because of her strong, resilient nature. They fell in love quickly and were married the next year. Sychaeus's family was also quite wealthy, and they left him a sprawling estate outside of Portland. Things couldn't have been more perfect.
Then, two years later, tragedy struck. Pygmalion, upon learning about priceless valuables in Sychaeus's collection, grew extremely jealous. He had already squandered the money left to him by his father. While Elissa was away, he snuck into their estate and began to steal some of the precious items inside. Sychaeus, home early from work, caught him in the act. And then, Pygmalion took a sword hanging above the fireplace and stabbed Sychaeus repeatedly, making off with the "treasure."
Dido was left heartbroken. After Pygmalion was put on trial and convicted for the murder of her husband (and sentenced to life in jail), she moved to New York City to start fresh. Although she had promised herself that she would never fall in love again, she met Aeneas. She was immediately stricken by him, and they had a passionate relationship from the beginning. They married on a whim, only a few months after meeting. They moved into an apartment on the Upper East Side. They were married for a few years, until Elissa was left heartbroken once more. Aeneas, too, left her.
It seemed that the only way to escape this torture was suicide.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
The day has started out like any other. Elissa Purcell woke up next to her husband, Aeneas, and snuggled in bed with him for about twenty minutes. She felt as though their bodies molded together perfectly, and she even said as much. Aeneas just grunted and got out of bed. Strange, she thought, confused by his behaviour. She lay in bed for another fifteen minutes before going to the kitchen to make her morning coffee. Aeneas was already there, having made coffee for the both of them. His expression was blank.
"Darling, is there anything wrong?"
It all went downhill from there. Everything ended in tears. It had (almost) hurt as much as finding her first husband, Sychaeus, dead on the floor in a puddle of his own blood.
"Di, you're holding me down. I can't live like this any longer. I'd like a divorce."
The words replayed in her head over the following weeks. He was long gone, and she was left alone in the apartment. She'd spend hours on end, gazing out the window to the street below, just hoping that she'd see him walk into the building. Even daily calls to her sister, Anna, did nothing to ease her broken heart. She'd hang up the phone and go back to her perch on the window seat, staring down at the concrete below.
++
Eventually, the pain grew to be too much to bear. It ate away at Elissa, leeching colour from her face and flesh from her bone. The divorce left her with plenty of money, as did the deaths of Sychaeus and her father. Money did not buy happiness. Living like this was torture, and death seemed to be the only solution.
One morning in September, she donned a grey peacoat, grabbed her keys, and left the apartment for what she thought would be the last time. She took the subway to the George Washington Bridge and began to walk. Everything seemed to be a blur. Next thing she knew, she was standing on the edge of the bridge, staring down at the grey waters of the Hudson River. Gusts of wind whipped at her face, almost seeming to push her back from the rail. Yet again, everything became a blur.
The next thing she could remember was the siren of an ambulance cutting through the morning fog and hands pulling her backwards.
