Hi, my name is (Alexx) and this is my (First) character. I found this site through (proboards support). Something you should know about me is (i'm completely in love with Rent... and Anthony Rapp... and Adam Pascal. ).
Canon: RENT
Custom Title: crap, i don't know. does mark say anything catchy? um... the adorable film maker? lol i have no clue.
PHYSICAL
Age: 25.. I guess.. I don't know. It never really says...
Gender: male
Appearance:
Height: 5' 8"
Body: skinny... cause he doesn't eat a lot.
Other distinguishing features: he has glasses and his scarf.
Wardrobe: Mark's clothes look as though he picked them up off the street. Which in some cases, he may have. He likes sweaters, jumpers, and khaki pants. He likes to have the appearance of someone with class, even if he doesn't have it. He has his trusty scarf (either blue and white or black and white, depending on the movie or play) and he wears it whenever he thinks there's even the slightest chance it's going to snow. Mark's clothes are cheap, but that's just because he can't afford anything good. He does his best with what he has, but will often repeat an outfit within the same week. He wears scuffed up sneakers, and occasionally a pair of old converse from his college days. He wears glasses (contacts are too expensive) and his hair is usually unruly and sticking up. It almost seems like he cuts it himself. His only accessories (besides his handy dandy scarf) are his messenger bag and his camera. They're always on him. Always.[/ul]
Play By: the amazingly adorable Anthony Rapp.
PERSONALITY
General personality:
Mark hides in his work. This is a common thing said about him. If you asked Mark, he'd simply explain that he likes to film things. It's his passion, the one thing he wants to do with his life. That's a lie. Mark realized early on that if you're constantly behind a camera, it's easier to detach from everything going on around you. This information has stuck with him, and he still uses it. That doesn't mean Mark doesn't like filming. He really does, he wants to get if not famous, then recognized because of it. Mark is Jewish, but he does not really follow religion as much as he did in his childhood home. He does not keep in contact with his family as much as they wish. When they invite him home for holidays, he usually does not go. He is an uncle, but he has never met his nephews or nieces. He is the ex-boyfriend of Maureen Johnson. She cheated on him, but he put up with it because he loved her. Then came the faithful day when she dumped him for a woman. Mark now has no one when it comes to love, and he finds he's okay with that.
Mark considers his friends his family. They are the only people he would even consider opening up too. His best friend is a mister Roger Davis, and they share a loft. This being said, he knows a lot about Roger and Roger knows a lot about him. If you asked him if he thought he was a good friend, he would say no. He thinks he's been a horrible friend to Roger, and all of his other friends. There's so much stuff happening around him, that Mark's totally freaked out about the future. He's the only one out of his good friends that does not have HIV, and that makes him feel guilty and scared. He doesn't want to watch his friends die around him.
Quotes, frequently used expressions:
"Maureen, come on give me my camera! You're going to break it! This is not my bar mitzvah!"
"There are times when we're dirt broke, hungry, and freezing and I ask myself 'Why the hell am I still living here?' ... and then they call. And I remember"
"I don't own emotion, I rent"
"Touche."
"Will I loose my dignity, will someone care? Will I wake tomorrow, from this nightmare"
"She dumped me for a lawyer named Joanne."
"Hey Collins! Don't get your ass kicked this time!"
"I sold my soul" Joanne: "For three grand a segment!"
Likes: (please list at least three)
Dislikes: (please list at least three)
Strengths: (please name three) he's the "rock" of the group, he is actually a really good film maker, and he's a really good listener.
Weaknesses:(please name three) he hates how his friends are all going to leave him and that makes him hide his emotions, really good tea, Maureen.
BACKGROUND
Family: His mom, his dad, and his sister Cindy. He also has a brother-in-law and nieces or nephews
Education: he attended Brown, but dropped out.
Occupation: Be a bohemian. Also, he worked for Buzzline but quit.
Worst past experience: Roger's withdrawal I'm thinking. Or April's suicide. Or finding out Roger and Collins both had AIDs. Or being dumped for a girl.
Best past experience: Meeting Angel, Mimi, Roger, Collins, Maureen, Joanne, and Benny.
Image: Everyone sees Mark as being really dedicated to his work. This is true, yet they also notice he's only finished one film in his twenty-five years. Only the people closest to him can figure out when he's trying to hide something.
History:
Mark was born in Scarsdale to his parents. He was raised in a Jewish home with an older sister. He attended elementary school where he was automatically labeled as a 'nerd.' He has been bullied his whole school career. When he was in high school he learned to tango at the Scarsdale Jewish Community Center with the rabbi's daughter.
His parents had his life planned out for him by the time he was a senior. He was going to attend Brown and get a business major, and then start a business, marry a nice Jewish girl, and give them plenty of grandchildren. He started out their dream, being accepted to Brown and attending the first year. His second year he met a professor that would eventually change his and his room mate (Benjamin Coffin)'s life. Professor Collins taught them how it was really like in the world.
In the end, Mark dropped out of Brown and moved in with the older man. That was how he met Roger. Benny moved in soon after, and they all lived in a loft in the East Village. Mark soon became close to Roger, and realized that his girlfriend (April Ericson) had gotten him addicted to heroin. He did nothing, because what was he supposed to do?
April introduced him to Maureen Johnson, and they soon started dating. Mark loved her. Then, April killed herself and left a note saying that she and Roger had gotten AIDs. Mark had to restrict Roger from harming himself, and while he was going through heroin withdrawal for six months. During this time Benny married someone and moved out of the loft, Collins left to go teach at a college in another state, and Maureen dumped him for a woman. Eventually Collins came back, and introduced them to Angel Dumot-Schunard. Roger met Mimi Marquez, and Maureen met Joanne Jefferson. Benny faded out of their life, only to become their landlord. Mark watched as Roger and Mimi became a couple, broke up, and got back together. He watched as Roger fled to Santa Fe, and came back with his song. He watched as Collins came close to losing Angel, and then got her back. He watched Maureen and Joanne's whirl wind relationship. He also had to deal with his family almost breaking up when Angel was in the hospital.
When Benny kicked them out and they needed money, Mark reluctantly took a job at a sleazy news show called Buzzline. He quit later when he realized that he had to focus on his own film. He is often in the background of his friend's, and no one pays much attention to him when they're introduced to the group. All he is is the scrawny film maker. Why bother getting to know him?

THE SAMPLE

Mark couldn't stand the fact that his camera was out of film. He had to decide whether to use up some of the money they had to buy more, or deal with getting a job. Mark sat on the couch of the loft, trying to think about what he should do. If only Roger didn't have HIV... if only they didn't have to spend half the money they had on AZT... he put those thoughts out of his head. Complaining wasn't going to help anything. It would just make Mark wish for something that was impossible. He shouldn't even be thinking about Roger's HIV. It wasn't his problem. Okay, that was a lie. If he started thinking about it, he would start getting depressed. And he didn't have his camera at the moment, so that just wouldn't work. He looked around, wondering where Roger was. Then he remembered Mimi. Right. He was most likely in her loft, like he was most of the time. He sighed, and lay down on the couch. He didn't know why he was thinking all of these depressing things. It had started out whether or not he should get a job to pay for film, or take some out of their food/rent/AZT money. He groaned, and wrapped his scarf around his eyes so it was dark. At least to him.
Mark had no life. That had become painfully obvious when everyone else had gotten one. He had no girlfriend, hell not even a boyfriend. Not that he went that way.. yet. If he didn't get a girlfriend soon... he laughed a little uncomfortably at the thought. He then realized that he had laughed. He shut his mouth tight, but that just made him want to laugh more. Soon he let a chuckle escape, and that was followed by full hysterical giggles. He hadn't even thought anything funny. Soon he had to wipe his eyes as he finished laughing. He sat up, removed the scarf from his eyes, and looked around the loft. There were still Roger's posters everywhere. He sighed. At least he had a picture of his best friend to keep him company...
