Hi, my name is Jewel and this is my first character. I found this site through an ad. Something you should know about me is I’m a sucker for musicals.
Canon: Phantom of the Opera
Custom Title: Let me be your light
PHYSICAL
Age: 21
Gender: male
Appearance: Undeniably handsome in an almost delicate way, Raoul has beautiful blue eyes in a face so fine-featured it is almost girlish. He tried to make his baby face look more mature with facial hair, but only had a small, fine mustache that he shaved off when his brother told him it looked ridiculous. He dresses well, and because of his year in the Navy, he carries his tall and athletic frame with good posture.
Height: 5’10”
Body: Athletic, slim
Other distinguishing features:
Wardrobe: Because his family is wealthy, Raoul takes pride in his appearance, and is always very well-dressed. He enjoys looking and feeling pristine and sophisticated, and his dress is impeccable. He does not keep up with the latest fashions, because most of the time he just wears a suit or tuxedo when he is seen at public events.[/ul]
Play By: Patrick Wilson
PERSONALITY
General personality: Even though his parents have been dead for a few years, as they had him late in life, Raoul still has a somewhat childish nature about him because he was spoiled by his two sisters and aunt. He has a tendency to be naïve and believe anything is possible, and is dreamy and idealistic. Being raised by two sisters and an aunt has made him somewhat effeminate, and living in New York City surrounded by art has not really helped this image. His brother wishes he was more like him, masculine and domineering, but his affectionate tendencies have endeared him to many people.
Being childish has also made him impulsive and gives him the feeling that he is invincible. He joined the Navy on a whim, and planned to travel all over the world on a whim. He does things without thinking, and can be extremely stubborn when it comes to following his beliefs, including the Catholic religion his French parents raised him with that causes him to wear a cross around his neck. He maintains a sense of honor that his brother does not. He tends to be serious and sincere, and does not have much of a sense of humor.
He is kind and friendly to everyone he meets, and though his wealth has made him spoiled, he is generous and charitable. He has donated a lot of money to support the arts, and though he doesn’t really have any career ambitions because of his wealth, he does wish to be useful to others. He likes going to see the opera, looking at museums, and the more athletic pursuits of horseback riding and swimming. He mostly dreams of meeting Christine, getting married and having a family.
Quotes, frequently used expressions: “Did your father also tell you that I love you, Christine, and I can’t live without you?”
Likes:
Dislikes:
Strengths: amiable, intelligent, kind
Weaknesses: naïve, fearful, impulsive
BACKGROUND
Family: Philippe de Chagny, father (deceased); Amelia de Chagny, mother (deceased); Philippe de Chagny, brother; Marie de Chagny, sister; Belle de Chagny, sister; Madeleine de Chagny, aunt
Education: expensive private schools, Columbia University undergrad bachelor in art history
Occupation: Heir and sometime sailor in the Navy
Worst past experience: losing his parents
Best past experience: meeting Christine as a child on vacation to the ocean
Image: People believe Raoul is spoiled and effeminate, though very kind, well-dressed, and intelligent. He is handsome and women are attracted to him, but he is sometimes too obtuse to see, and he is still in love with his childhood sweetheart. He is not a womanizer like his older brother.
History: Born in Quebec to extremely wealthy old French family, his mother had him at a late age and died in childbirth. Unsure what to do with Raoul, his father sent him to New York City for Raoul’s education and to spend time in the culturally rich city to live with his aunt. His brother was already an adult and had moved out of the house by that time to do his own thing, but his two sisters were only a few years older than him and spoiled him. He went on vacation to the ocean and there he met Christine Daae. He rescued her from drowning, and got her scarf out of the ocean. After that they were fast friends; he spent time hearing stories from her father. When the summer ended, he was shipped back to the city, and he thought he would never see her again.
His father died when he was twelve and he was raised by his sisters and his aunt. After graduating from high school in a prestigious private school, he went to Columbia University to study art history, just because there wasn’t really anything else he wanted to study, but he was bored of just sitting around going to museums and such. He got a bachelor’s degree, but after those two years, he dropped out to join the Navy because of his restlessness. He sailed with the Navy for a year, and when his term of service was up, he planned on traveling around the world, but had to return to New York City for his sisters' double wedding. He has never stopped looking for Christine.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample: Raoul looked at himself in the mirror and straightened the red tie around his neck, swallowing and looking his image up and down critically. He gave a little sigh. He looked as he normally did – suit jacket impeccable, hair gelled into place, slacks pressed, red tie reminiscent of that red scarf of his youth that he had plucked from the water so many years ago now he should not even be able to remember it. But he did, as clear as crystal. It wasn’t the scarf that he remembered, but its owner, the little girl with golden curls who had haunted him ever since.
Perhaps one summer with her as children wasn’t enough to justify years’ worth of pining, but he had seen her a few times throughout the years, just enough to keep her at the forefront of his mind when he thought at last that he might forget about her when he saw her again. As much as he loved his life, with the galas and the premieres and the opening nights of operas like the one he was attending tonight, it wasn’t as fulfilling as he sometimes thought it would be; all in all, he was lonely. His sister had just gotten married, and the other had a few years ago; Philippe was with a different girl every night. What about him? A tabloid or two had accused him of being gay, an outrageous and insulting lie considering his piety, simply because he wasn’t interested in loose women! He only wanted Christine.
He wasn’t sure if he liked what he saw in the mirror. He wondered if Christine would, if she saw him. And just as he did nearly every night, because he would not give up until he found her, he thought, Maybe tonight will be the night. Maybe tonight.
