Hi, my name is Meaghan and this is my second (technically) character. I found this site through Taylorrr! Something you should know about me is I love music and writing more than almost anything. Except... chocolate.
Canon: The Outsiders
Custom Title: High on just plain living.
PHYSICAL
Age: 16 going on 17. His birthday is October 8th.
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Height: 5'10"
Body: Thin and tall, sort of lanky, but he's got a good build. He's good in a fight. "He's not as tall as Darry, and he's a little slimmer, but he has a finely drawn, sensitive face that somehow manages to be reckless and thoughtful at the same time."
Other distinguishing features: "Soda is handsomer than anyone else I know. Not like Darry--- Soda's movie-star kind of handsome, the kind that people stop on the street to watch go by. ...He's got dark-gold hair that he combs back--- long and silky and straight--- and in the summer the sun bleaches it to a shining wheat gold."
Wardrobe: He doesn't get dressed up very often. He'll most likely be found wearing jeans and a tee-shirt. He'll normally be in his bare feet because he hates wearing socks and shoes. [/ul]
Play By: Rob Lowe
PERSONALITY
General personality: "...Soda is one of a kind. He can get drunk in a drag race or dancing without ever getting near alcohol. In our neighborhood it's rare to find a kid who doesn't drink once in a while. But Soda never touches a drop--- he doesn't need to. He gets drunk on just plain living. And he understands everybody."
Sodapop Curtis is always "happy-go-lucky and grinning." He's always very energetic, wild and reckless, and doesn't like sitting still, even to watch a movie. He likes working with cars (he works at the DX with his best friend, Steve Randle) and he loves horses. Sodapop is horse crazy. When he was twelve years old, he "owned" a buckskin horse named Mickey Mouse. Technically, it belonged to the guy who kept it at the stables that Sodapop was working at, but the horse absolutely loved Soda. Eventually Mickey Mouse got sold, but Soda still hops on a horse whenever he gets the chance. He even used to ride in rodeos, saddle bronc, until he tore a ligament and his dad made him stop. Soda only smokes very rarely, "to steady is nerves or when he wants to look tough."
He loves his brothers. He's got a good relationship with both of them. "Sodapop isn't afraid of [Darry] like everyone else and enjoys teasing him," and he always listens to Pony and tries his best to understand what Pony's saying. He always takes up for his little brother, too. He doesn't get mad easily- nine times out of ten you'll find him in a good mood. He doesn't really hold grudges, either, unless it's about something big. His father used to take Sodapop and his brothers on fishing and hunting trips, but Soda was never patient enough for fishing, and always goofed around and scared the game away when they were hunting. Nevertheless, he still always had a blast. Sodapop is always having a blast and he "can make anyone grin."
Soda has a hard time accepting things, though. "Serious reality has a hard time coming through to Soda, but when it does, it hits him hard."
The Curtis brothers take turns making dinner, and whoever gets up first makes breakfast. When it's Sodapop's turn to cook, you'll probably end up with purple mashed potatoes and green chicken or something along those lines. He thinks the food's more interesting that way. He also likes his eggs with grape jelly, and after the Curtis parents died Soda managed to talk Darry into letting them have chocolate cake for breakfast every morning. When Soda makes the cake, he always puts too much sugar in the icing. He doesn't like coffee- he prefers chocolate milk. Sodapop is just about as crazy about chocolate as he is about horses.
"Sodapop'll never grow up at all."
Likes:
Strengths: listening, understanding people, fixing cars
Weaknesses: school, holding grudges, sometimes falls for a girl too fast
BACKGROUND
Family: Darrell Shaynne Curtis, Sr.- deceased- father
Elizabeth Lynn Curtis- deceased- mother
Darrell Shaynne Curtis, Jr.- age 21- brother
Ponyboy Michael Curtis- age 15- brother
Education: Dropped out once finishing tenth grade.
Occupation: Works at Halden Cooper's gas station with Steve full time.
Worst past experience: It's a tie between his parents' funeral, because that's when the fact that they were really gone really sunk in, and the night Sandy left him, because he had really loved her and didn't want to let her go. He was real torn up about both of those things for a long time.
Best past experience: The trips to the country and to the lake he and family and the gang took together when he was younger, before his parents' death and before they moved to NYC.
Image: He's nice to everyone he meets unless they give him a reason not to be, and even then he won't be really be mean to them. He's always grinning and laughing and his happy-go-lucky attitude is more often than not contagious. He can come off as being too energetic sometimes, maybe sort of obnoxious, but most people like him.
History: Sodapop Curtis was born on October 8th. He and Darry bonded almost immediately- Darry had that "I'm older and so much better at everything than you" thing going on, and Soda had that "My big brother is the best thing ever!" thing going on, so it worked out pretty well for them both. A few years later, Ponyboy was born. Soda wasn't happy about having a little brother at all- he liked being the baby of the family. But eventually he saw how much Pony looked up to him, and he warmed up to the little guy and even got to like being a big brother. Darry, Pony, and Soda all had a pretty normal childhood. Sodapop met Steve Randle when they were in second grade, and not long after the Curtis' met Two-Bit Mathews, Johnny Cade, and Dallas Winston as well.
The Curtis parents died in a car accident about two years ago, and it hit all three brothers hard. At his parents' funeral, "Soda had broken down and bawled like a baby." Darry took custody of his younger brothers without a second thought, putting off going to college. Soda knew he wasn't doing any good in school since he was failing everything except auto-mechanics and gym, so at the end of the school year he convinced Darry to let him drop out and he began working full time at the DX to help Darry out with the bills.
The September after he dropped out of school, Soda's girlfriend of over a year, Sandy, told him that she was pregnant, and that the baby wasn't his. He hadn't seen it coming but he still wanted to be there for her despite the fact that she had cheated on him. She didn't want anything to do with him, and a day or two after she told him, she moved to her grandmother's house in Florida. The Curtis' moved to New York City not long after that for better job opportunities.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample: Sodapop Curtis hates the rain.
He hates the lightning. He hates the sound of thunder. He hates the dark, ominous clouds that come with the rain. He hates the sound the rain makes when it hits the roof. He hates the puddles the rain makes and all the mud it creates. He hates the way it looks when the individual droplets slide down the window panes. When he was little he’d watch them, entranced, waiting to see which rain drop won. He used to love the rain; it used to be his favorite kind of weather. But now, now Sodapop Curtis hates the rain.
He was at the DX working, and a storm was about to begin. He watched the skies fill with the stormy gray clouds he hates so much, and now he watched the bright, powerful lightning strike miles away from where he was sitting. Seconds later, he heard the loud, booming thunder that always follows a lightning strike. And then the skies opened up, and the rain began falling. Within minutes, it was pouring out there, and Soda figured they wouldn’t be having any more customers for the rest of the day. He’d be getting paid to just sit around, but that was fine with him. He watched lightning strike somewhere far off, and counted the seconds until he heard the thunder.
The little bell above the door jingled, cutting into the sound of the thunder, and he tore his eyes away from the windows. Outside, the storm was raging and it wouldn’t be over any time soon. It was just getting started. Standing in the doorway, however, was something much more interesting then the storm. A girl about his age with short blonde hair and strikingly green eyes looked at him shyly, unsure of what to say. She was soaked to the bone and shivering. Soda smiled at her.
"Hi," he said, looking at her. "Little wet out there, huh? I'll grab you a towel." He walked back to the storage room, where there is probably everything somebody would need to survive the apocalypse. There are towels and blankets and even a flashlight, he thinks, and even, for some reason, a few cans of paint. There’s tape and glue and paper and a bunch of other stuff that’s practically useless when you’re fixing cars. Most of the tools and car parts are in the garage, but there’re a few stray hammers and spark plugs here and there. The storage room is hopelessly messy and unorganized and he’s not sure why half of the stuff is in there, but at least the towels weren’t hard to find. He grabbed one and headed back to the front room.
"Here ya go," he said, handing the shivering, rain-soaked girl the towel. He smiled.
