As soon as she called out his name, Meg Giry almost regretted it. He was in the middle of hanging out with some girl with the brightest red hair she had ever seen. She didn't even think there was a red head among her friends at the Paris Opera House or the New York City Ballet. Maybe she should just get out of there as quick as she can, pretend like she never saw Ponyboy and his friend with the red hair. She was just about to turn and go but he was talking. She was half turned around to leave but she turned back to face them.
"Meg, uh, hi," Little Miss Giry smiled weakly at her friend. "Hello, my friend." she said softly, her cheeks turning bright red. "Wasn't expectin' to see ya here." "I wasn't expecting to see you here either." she said, "Well, I'd hoped I'd see you or Sodapop....but not Two-Bit or Dally..." she laughed softly. She knew Ponyboy probilly knew about her encounters with Two-Bit and Dally.
This is, um...Cherry Valance." Meg went over to them, her light dancer step giving her job away. She offered her hand to the girl. "Pleased to meet you, Madmoiselle Valance." she smiled a friendly, if shy smile. The little ballerina was always a bit shy and nervous around new people.

Cherry felt out of place, maybe she should just leave Ponyboy and his friend. She could feel her cheeks red with the emotion of being caught. The girl looked rather nice and that she wouldn’t cause any trouble, she even looked a Soc. At this observation the redhead felt a bit more comfortable at the situation they were in. She rubbed the back of her neck as the two spoke, maybe it would be best if she kept quiet.
Cherry couldn’t help but admire Ponyboy, she didn’t want to leave. Ever. It seemed like the perfect day, the perfect moment. Her eyes fluttered closed and her mind tuned out the small conversation Ponyboy and the other pretty girl were having. Since the moment at the movies when she met him the teenager had been watching him from afar. Only recently did she start to wonder what the feel of his lips atop hers would be and now she knew. The redhead spent countless nights dreaming of the feel of his arms around her, holding her against him. So many times she pictured him the hero in a story of Ponyboy. The side of her that wasn’t gone too far into the boy screamed at her to stop. That it wouldn’t work, that Ponyboy and Cherry would never be something that could happen.
The world just wouldn’t allow it. Cherry wanted that day, she prayed for the day when Greasers and Socs came together. In truth, she was afraid. The young woman was afraid that she would fall in love with Ponyboy Curtis only to be ripped apart from him by their classes. Was it wrong that she would gladly leave everything behind as long as she could be with the boy she had just kissed? No, it wasn’t wrong as much as it was a crazy thought. Something that could never happen. Why was her brain so mixed up? It wasn’t too far into the Socs, that way she couldn’t only fall for the rich boys. The football players that she cheered for at so many games. Her brain was nothing of a Greaser, she didn’t know anything they knew in order to survive. Half the things she heard about them she was sure that she could never do. If Cherry wasn’t a Soc, if she lived on the other side of town. Would she still feel the way she did? The world was so confusing.
The girl’s eyes opened again and she shook her head slightly, waking herself from her daydream. She wasn’t afraid, she was terrified to fall in love. It didn’t help that she felt like she was falling deeper every time she gave a glance to him at. There were so many times she was almost caught by her friends. A glance to Ponyboy in the cafeteria and she was asked with ”What are you smiling at, Sherri Valance?” to which she would respond with a shrug and ”Nothing. I just saw a cute boy pass is all, its about time I get past Bob, isn’t it?”. Or if she raced get to class early because she forgot to finish her homework when it was all really in order to snag a spot beside him(to be his partner or just to be near him during the class). Before long Cherry would be sitting with him because ‘her table was too crowded and there was no other place to sit.’ What if Ponyboy made her stop? That he realized how much danger she was putting them in by trying to be near him. She would need to be more…spy-like.
Again, her eyes fell on Pony and her heart fluttered in her chest. Then, she was snapped out of her reverie by hearing a voice that didn’t belong to the boy she was staring at. ”It’s a pleasure, Ms…” she trailed off realizing she didn’t know the girls name, ”I’m sorry, I didn’t seem to catch your name.”
Cherry turned to Pony and gave him a smile, ”If you guys what to hang out together I can go. I don’t mind.” God, could they hear her heart? It was pounding in her ears.

I shifted my footing and leaned half-heartedly against a tree, managing a slightly awkward laugh. "Two-Bit and Dally aren't that awful, are they? Well, maybe Dally is. But not if you get to know him. I guess it's like that with a lot of people though, right?" I rambled on, talking just to fill the silence. I usually didn't mind the quiet, but this was different. Nothing really changed as Meg greeted Cherry, but there was something... different in the air. I couldn't place it and it put me on edge.
"Meg Giry," I reminded Cherry, half-mumbling it into her ear. Why was I so damn nervous? I tried telling myself there was nothing wrong with me and Cherry being here together. Nothing out of the ordinary. Right, except her being a Soc and me being a greaser. Nothing except that. Always that.
"No, it's okay," I said as my heart leapt into my throat, suddenly terrified Cherry would leave and we'd never get the chance to talk ever again. (--and I'd never feel her lips on mine again, never smell the strawberry in her hair, that amazing cleanness that just felt right on her and only her--) Because in school, or anywhere else except here where greasers and Socs were just plain ordinary people, we passed each other in the halls and I wouldn't dare say hi, because there was just too much at stake that wasn't mine to gamble.
I slid down the side of the tree, feeling the bark crumble just a little behind me as I sat down again. After another uncomfortable space of silence, I ran a hand through my ungreased, too-light hair and said, rubbing my eyes, "Why don't we just... sit and talk for a while?" It was a weak attempt at normalcy, but it was the best I could do. I never had been a great conversation starter.
