A small part of Jane felt wretched, watching Edward walk away like that. She wished that she could give him what he wanted; not that she knew what he wanted. He was always so cross about her old disposition and now, she's changed, and he wants the old her back. Jane couldn't find a way to justify that at all. She had made so much progress, become a stronger person since leaving Thornfield. Jane still loved him and she was sure that she always would, but it wasn't the kind of love that would let her run back into his arms and live happily ever after because she wouldn't be happy.
She was happy in the here and now and unfortunately the here and now didn't include a relationship with Edward.
Jane pushed in her chair and nodded back to Edward. "Goodbye, it was lovely seeing you again." Jane added quietly that they could do lunch again sometime. "Just because we aren't together doesn't mean we can't be friends." She pointed out before turning and walking out slowly.
Why were her knees shaking so?
