Peter couldn’t help but smirk when Jane smiled and laughed at his little joke. Sometimes his humor was so far off the mark he didn’t know what he was doing opening his mouth. So this was definitely better.
"Yes, we must restore it to it's original, spotless state."
Peter did laugh then when she nodded seriously and hid a grin by ducking her head and taking another bite. Oh, she had a sense of humor! That was a wonderful trait. He was sure she gained many friends with it.
He watched her eat, noting how she used her napkin, carefully chewing her food like she was just savoring every bite. So he couldn’t help but ask how it was, filling the comfortable silence. He rarely found silences comfortable. The people he associated with were always so eager to fill it. Jane didn’t seem the type. She kind of reminded him of Perry that way. He’d be comfortable not to talk at all.
"It's good, thank you."
Jane was only half way through her meal, looking like she was getting full. Peter glanced down at where his own plate was nearly finished. Yeah, he just ate more than most people. He ate a lot at once and then he had a lot of time between meals because he couldn’t cook and buying things was a hassle.
“Oh, don’t thank me – you officially cooked them,” Peter laughed. “I’m just glad you stuck around to help me eat them. I’d be living off pancakes for the next day or so.”
And leftovers for more than a meal weren’t fun. As it was, there was still a stack of pancakes, so he would send some home with Jane. He would still have enough for breakfast tomorrow.
“So, do you often eat dinner with random people who come knocking at your door?” he asked, smiling, but he was curious.
His other neighbors rarely opened their doors, let alone were pleasant and came home with him for dinner. It was refreshing, but he still wanted to know.
