Hi, my name is Cherry and this is my first character. I found this site through a nifty ad on a random forum. Something you should know about me is I often daydream that while Vincent Price was the Last Man on Earth, I was the last woman. I adore the French language and culture.

PERSONALITY
General personality:
Madeline is a very reserved woman, often preferring to keep her comments to herself. She avoids confrontations and likes to play the role of an observer in any situation. Madeline desperately seeks her twin brother's approval in every facet of her life from appearance to career to future beau. She fears that if she is not obedient to Roderick's wishes, or what she believes are his wishes, she will be left alone in the world with no one to care for her. On occasion, very rare occasion, she does go against her older brother's word and does what she wants. Though she generally regrets such actions.
More than even making Roderick proud, Madeline wants to find love, the love she writes about but has never found. She fears she may never find that special love before she dies. Madeline has a deadly condition which is characterized by fainting spells, catatonic trances, and depressive states. No doctor has seconded Roderick's diagnosis, leaving Madeline to believe the doctors are lying.
*Note: Madeline has a slanted view on things, in her head Roderick is much crueler, controlling and insane than he may actually be. Unless the future Roderick wishes to be as crazy as Madeline puts him out to be.
Quotes, frequently used expressions: "What would Roderick think?" "I am dying."
Likes:
Dislikes:
Strengths: Her romantic optimism, her good listening skills, and her writing abilities.
Weaknesses: Her lack of backbone, her distrust of doctors and anyone who speaks badly of Roderick, and her belief that she is dying.
BACKGROUND
Family: Roderick Usher, her twin brother who came out of the womb just before her.
Education: Home-schooled until she went to university, which she graduated four years ago.
Occupation: Romance novelist
Worst past experience: The day she left the Usher House for New York City.
Best past experience: The day she published her first book.
Image: Most see Madeline as an independent, talented author preferring the company of books rather than people. A woman of high morals, possibly a future senator's wife.
History:
Madeline Usher was born only minutes after her twin brother Roderick. Growing up, their parents were often absent, leaving the twins alone in the house and Roderick, being the elder, was in charge meaning he got to choose the games. Her favorite game was hide and seek, though the Usher House did not resemble the home of a family with children, it was a cold, hard place with plenty of breakable antiques. So the children had to play in the basement cellar which still holds the tombs of the Usher family. Death was often around Madeline, not only in the coffins of late family members, but it seemed nothing would ever grow in their garden, pets would never last more than a month and even her own parents died before Madeline truly got to know who they were.
Shortly after her parents' death, which is still a mystery to Madeline, the girl fell ill. She would faint often and remain unconscious for long periods of time. This strange condition made normal schooling impossible for Madeline, so she was home-schooled. Rarely leaving the house, Madeline read of far away places in books and tales from the house workers. She had dreamt of going to a big city, seeing lots of people, the place she wanted to go was New York City. Madeline did not tell Roderick of her dreams to go to the city, for she knew he would not like it. He always seemed attached to their house. All in secret she applied to university in the city and made all the preparations. The day she left was the day she told Roderick of her intentions. It is hard to recall what happened, as she has all but blocked out the awful day. Somehow, though, she ended up in New York City.
Madeline studied hard and did exceedingly well in her classes and even began to feel like a normal college student. That never lasted too long. That feeling of normality or what society saw as normal always vanished when she visited home. Throughout the four years of college, she would visit the family house often. Each time she returned to the house for an extended time, Madeline would feel her illness symptoms coming along and she knew it would be time to go soon. There was something wrong with that house or perhaps it was her?
She finished college, an accomplishment she knew Roderick was proud of and began her work of becoming an established author. Two years later, she had three novels published and still writing more. Madeline stays in New York City as she tells people it gives her inspiration, really she is afraid that living in the Usher House will only kill her more quickly than her condition.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
The heavy door creaked open and the cool winds of the outside entered the somber house along with Madeline, placing her suitcase down, she looked up the stairwell. Letting out a sigh of relief she closed the door. Roderick was not in the parlor, which meant she had time to make herself presentable. "Albert?" she called into the hall.
The elder butler appeared in the hall, "Yes, madam Madeline?"
His sudden appearance did not surprise the woman as he had been doing it her entire life. Though that is what the house workers were supposed to do. Be unseen until called upon. "When is dinner?" she asked, unsure of the time as her plane was late in arriving at the airport and getting a taxi to drive so far into the countryside was a timely task.
"At six thirty, madam, as usual. Should I call on Roderick?" Albert spoke in such a monotone fashion, it was difficult to tell that he had even asked a question.
She shook her head fiercely, "No, I have to get ready, the lay-over between flights was not enough time to change." The grandfather clock in the dim-lit parlor rung, marking the sixth hour of the evening. With that Madeline took hold of her suitcase and scurried up the grand staircase. Walking down the long, carpeted hall. She kept her eyes on the floor because the portraits on the wall frightened her, they always seemed to find a way to watch her.
Reaching the sanctuary of her bedroom she flipped on the lights and placed her suitcase on her floral print bed. She took off her gloves and placed them daintily on her bed side table. Next she removed her coat and went straight to the bathroom to remove her makeup. She was wearing far too much. Madeline splashed water on her face, then took a cloth from next to the sink and scrubbed off the natural-toned lipstick. She continued scrubbing her skin and worked up to her cheeks, getting the fine layer of blush off of her cheeks. She stood scrubbing at her lips, cheeks and eyes for ten minutes. The woman dropped the rag as she thought the job complete, staring at herself in the mirror, she felt her face, looking at the bright red from the rough rubbing. Madeline looked at her long locks of shining, brown hair which she recently had trimmed. She regretted it now, Roderick would notice and he would be mad at her for letting those outsiders change who she was as they did. She took her hair pins up and pinned the whole of her hair up, to conceal the barely noticeable new length. After perfectly twisting and pinning her hair, Madeline left her personal bathroom to look over her outfit in her bedroom's full-length mirror. She smoothed out her dark, tea-length dress. It covered her fell, except for her arms, they showed too much for Roderick's liking. Madeline opened her suitcase and pulled out a matching cardigan, she slipped the piece of clothing on and buttoned it from bottom to top. The house was quiet enough for her to hear the parlor's clock ring, announcing the time as six thirty. She checked herself one last time in the mirror before leaving her chambers.
