Hi, my name is Hal and this is my first character. I found this site through Yols, who I RP with on a LOST site. Something you should know about me is I don't usually play teenagers - usually I play middle-aged people with massive neuroses.
Canon: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Custom Title: this is what you wanted, ain't you proud?
PHYSICAL
Age: 16
Gender: female
Appearance: Dolores is, by all accounts, an average-looking teenager. The only remarkable thing about her appearance is that she looks a few years older than she really is. She has long, dirty blonde hair, which stays stubbornly wavy, even under extensive straightening and hair-spray therapy. Her eyes are brilliantly blue, and are probably her most distinguishing feature. They pop against her pale skin and even paler lips. Dolores is fairly lanky and thin, though her weight tends to waver between healthy and anorexic-looking.
Dolores has no visible musculature, and, stylistically, tries to evoke a high-fashion 60s feel. She wears a lot of vintage clothing - not banged-up jeans and band tees, but rubber skirts, sheath dresses, those kinds of things. It's not shocking that she finds Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick to be the most beautiful woman who ever lived, and that she makes an effort to try and dress like her.
Play By: Saoirse Ronan
PERSONALITY
General personality: Dolores, above all things, is extremely narcissistic. Her main interest is herself, so most of her decisions are rooted in whether or not she can profit from them. To that end, she is also manipulative; if she finds that someone she knows has anything she can use, she will do her best to wheedle it out of them. These two traits combine to form a dangerous cocktail. Dolores will put the pursuit of her interests - becoming a professional actress - in front of her friends, her own safety, and the law. Should anyone try to interfere with her plans, she usually manipulates them into believing she's going to be perfectly fine.
In addition to those two lovely traits, Dolores is fairly crude. She uses a lot of blunt phrasing and unpleasant words, usually to get a reaction out of those around her. Since she sees most of her acquaintances as stepping stones, she really doesn't care about the impression she leaves. She's also a habitual liar, in order to cover up her activities.
If we were to say something positive about Ms. Haze, it's that she's obviously determined to get to the top. It's the personality she's manufactured for herself to get there that's a bit disturbing. Why she's so cruel is anyone's guess. Occasionally, in moments of extreme duress, she murmurs half-truths about horrible things that may or may not be true.
Quotes, frequently used expressions: "filthy pervert" (directed towards anyone she deems fitting of the title/anyone who pisses her off)
Likes:
Dislikes:
Strengths: her cunning, acting skill, the ease at which she can slip away undetected if need be, her drive
Weaknesses: her cunning, her crudeness, her generally unpleasant personality
BACKGROUND
Family: Dolores ran away from home about two years ago. She says very little about her family, except when she's extremely depressed or angry. From the sound of things, her mother hated her because her twin brother died in childbirth, and, in her mother's words, she killed him. Dolores resents her mother for just about everything, and Dolores describes her to be almost exactly like her: manipulative, conniving, willing to disown her own daughter if it meant she got ahead.
Dolores' real father is, apparently, dead. She's mentioned that her mother remarried, but refuses to speak about her stepfather at all, except to call him "a motherfucker". She seems to hate her stepfather more than her mother, if that's even possible.
Education: high-school dropout
Occupation: believe it or not, Dolores actually is a working actress. She gets actual acting jobs. When she's not acting, she usually steals money, so...
Worst past experience: She lies so often, it's hard to tell what's true and what's not. The silence regarding her stepfather seems to be indicative of her true worst experiences, however.
Best past experience: She never shuts up about the time she saw The Poor Little Rich Girl at a run-down theater in the Bronx right after running away.
Image: Some believe Dolores to be a sweet girl who life handed a bad hand; others see her as an incorrigible corrupting influence who's probably crueler than those she escaped. Almost everyone agrees that she has a strange magnetism about her, that allows her to get away with things most people wouldn't even dream of trying. The high-class society is largely unaware of her existence, but a few might be watching her acting career, unaware of her toxic personality.
History: Dolores' childhood, from what she explains, was miserable. Her father died shortly after she was three, and her twin brother was stillborn, leaving her alone with a grieving, vengeful woman whose own mental instability led her to blame her toddler-aged daughter for all the sadness in her life. Dolores, under such a harsh environment, became as vindictive as her mother, blaming her for all of her problems. Her mother, intent on keeping her away from home as much as possible, sent her to the finest boarding school in North Carolina, where she soon figured out that the only way to navigate the social hierarchy was to be as backstabbing, ruthless, and conniving as possible.
When Dolores turned thirteen, her mother remarried. She refuses to explain anything about her stepfather, but cites him as a major reason for her escape from home. Apparently her mother grew even more insufferable, now seeing Dolores as not only a cause of suffering, but as someone to be jealous of. Despite this, Dolores continued to go to the best boarding school her mother could afford, the St. Quilty High School. When the school theater group at the school took a trip to New York City in her freshman year, Dolores, then the group's rising talent, went along, raising her own money to fund her way. Once in the city, she quickly got herself lost in it, and never bothered to find her friends.
This was her official induction into life as an urchin in New York City. Her first few weeks as a runaway were rough. She bleached her hair blonde with some help from a prostitute and was able to scrape by on the money she'd brought for the trip. Almost immediately she began soliciting acting jobs, presenting herself to potential employers as "Lolita Starfire". She's gotten mostly small understudy gigs in local theater, but they've paid for food and clothing. Dolores is avoiding getting any television or film jobs until she turns eighteen, at which point she can legally change her name and sever all ties with her abandoned family.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
Dolores ran.
She was used to doing this. Running was second nature to Dolores, just like lying. She was always running from something, unnatural blonde hair whipping behind her as she turned. Yes, that crazy man was still chasing her. She ran faster.
This time she actually had a pretty good reason to run, she reasoned, blue eyes wide with adrenaline as she skidded down an alleyway. There was a chain-link fence in front of her, but that would be no problem. As she neared the fence, she climbed up quickly, cat-like, almost flipping over it and landing gracefully on the other side.
She didn't bother to look backwards. The guy couldn't climb the fence. He'd been so strung out on whatever drug that it was a miracle he could even give chase. What a filthy pervert, Dolores thought as she exited the alleyway, emerging onto a crowded streetcorner somewhere in the Bronx.
She was going to be so late for that audition. She narrowed her eyes. Dolores resolved to track that man down as soon as he could... maybe she'd enlist a friend to make him pay.
He deserved it.
Tell us WHY your original character would fit with the theme of this board: Lolita is one of the most famous characters in English literature - the title of "lolita" has pervaded popular culture in a way that makes it truly unique. In the book, the rather impetuous girl is painted in a highly unreliable light, and modern literary criticism sees her as just as much of a monster as Humbert Humbert, the man who destroys her life with his love. Modernizing her character to reflect that Lo was definitely not perfect would fit in with the theme of reinvention present in this board. I'm also hoping it allows people who aren't familiar with Lolita beyond its prurient aspects to realize that it's not a smut book, or worse, the word that "lolicon" is derived from.
