PERSONALITY
General personality:
First and foremost, Marius is an activist at heart. His worries lie with taking care of the underdog and assuring that they have everything that they need before himself. Losing his mom to AIDS at 18 made him an activist for the HIV/AIDS community as well as the homeless. Rather than being the type of person that talks about doing things, Marius is the type that does them and with passion. He volunteers three afternoons a week at a homeless shelter and once at the local HIV/AIDS center. A good protest is the perfect way for Marius to spend a weekend.
At times, Marius can get so caught up in the big picture, that he misses the smaller important things in front of him. He is highly intelligent but can lack common sense. Marius is also loyal to a fault, willing to do anything for a friend even if it means getting hurt himself. As far as romantic relationships go, Marius is just a little immature. He’s been so busy protesting that his love life have taken a back seat to whatever he’s protesting. That has changed in recent times, but up until now, has been a real problem.
Likes: (please list at least three)
Dislikes: (please list at least three)

BACKGROUND
Family: (living or deceased relatives or people he/she would call family) Georges and Mary Pontmercy (42, 40. Parents, both deceased)
Education: Currently a social work student at NYU
Occupation: volunteer at soup kitchen and HIV center
Worst past experience:Losing his mother
Best past experience: First night in his apartment
Image: Marius is perceived to be a genuinely good person. He has a huge heart and even looks innocent. Looking into his eyes, you’d have no idea that he’s been through the things he’s been through.
History:
Marius was born into a North Jersey middle class family. Both of his parents were teachers at his local high school and made enough for them all to live comfortably. Marius played little league baseball, and wasn’t good at it. He took piano lessons and enjoyed that more. Mostly, they enjoyed just spending time together.
When Marius was in middle school, he brought home the flu. After a long week of aches, pains, and fever, Marius recovered. His mother, unfortunately, did not. After several weeks of sickness, Mary visited the doctor. The doctor performed several blood tests, expecting it to just be a run of the mill virus. What they found was most certainly not run of the mill. Mary was told she not only was HIV positive, but had AIDS from a blood transfusion she got after Marius’ birth. Georges also tested positive and was found to be even sicker than his mother.
Marius was petrified knowing that soon he’d lose both of his parents. The delay of diagnosis made it so treatment was difficult. Marius’ grandparents disowned their family because of their disease. It broke the boy’s heart knowing that he’d soon be alone.
Marius did his best in high school, getting the best grades he could. He knew that college was his only ticket to survival without the help of his parents. Georges died of pneumonia when Marius was just 17. It left his mother with only Marius to care for her. He juggled class work with doctors appointments and somehow managed to graduate at the top of his class.
He and his mother often did protests for the rights of people with AIDS on weekends in the city. Mary made him promise that even after she was gone he’d continue to fight. Mary died a few weeks before Marius started college at NYU. His parent’s life insurance pays the rent for his tiny beaten down apartment and gives him just enough to eat. Marius is poor but really, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
Marius idly stirred a large vat of soup as he watched others clean the hall. It was another Wednesday afternoon in the soup kitchen. Most people would be bored or saddened by spending time here. Marius found it inspiring. Poverty had no race, no color, and no religion. A person could have one day and have not the next. To him, the experience was fascinating. He couldn’t help but grin when they opened the door and the first of homeless started to walk into line.
First was Cathy and her daughter Megan. Cathy had a horrible alcohol problem, the stench unmistakable. Her daughter, Megan, was only ten and bounced from shelter to shelter with her mother. It broke the man’s heart to know that this little one had nowhere to go. Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out a small novel and snuck it to Megan.
“Got you something new to read tonight,” he whispered giving her a wink. Megan hated staying in the shelters at night and would often read her textbooks by a flashlight. Marius truly believed she would be something special one day, and wanted to help her to that end. At his college book store, there were book drives and sometimes he was able to grab a few to take to the soup kitchen for people to take with them.
Megan smiled at him and nodded, putting the book into his bag. Marius continued to serve the sea of faces that moved past him in the line, greeting them with a warm smile and a warmer bowl of soup. Marius didn’t have money to help all of the people, but he did have time. He felt a warmth in his chest, hoping that his mother could see him and that she would be proud.
