That Tuesday night he decided he'd, yet again, to break the rules and go to the rodeo with some of his old high school friends of his. He hadn't been in a while, he'd hurt his shoulder pretty bad a while back, so Darry decided it best he sit back and watch, and where was the fun in that? He made up some bad excuse and ventured out, only this time Soda and his gang of monkey's would be meeting a girl Soda had a few run in's with over the course of two days. She said she was tough and would love to give bull riding a shot, so Soda invited her here.
"You sure this little rich thing's gonna show up." His friend said before they reached the back of the rodeo, he'd asked this question five times now and it was really getting annoying.
Soda finished off his coke and tossed the can carelessly into the bushes, he smiled another one of his wild smiles and hopped the gate, getting into the red dirt stadium for free. "I'm sure now will you just shut up and get in here already."
"You serious about her riding a bull," The guy asked, this one he'd asked ten times,Sodapop smacked him in the back of the head just to shut him up.
"Do I gotta say it again?" Sodapop rolled his eyes, "Chick's tuff, she'll do it!"
"Yeah well she ain't no greaser, I wouldn't be surprised if she backs out of this dude."
"What do you know about greasers?" Sodapop asked, "You don't even live in the East side dumb-ass!"
He's buddies got a kick out of this and started laughing their asses off, he'd let 'em have their fun, he'd just continue walkin' and they'd follow him eventually. They were little tag-a-longs, wherever he went they went, and lord was it annoying. He was, for once, glad he had the gang instead of them.
"Something tells me he likes this girl, whadda think fellas?" Said an overly bold friend.
Soda turned, "I think you better shut your trap or I'll skin ya."
They fell silent.
He wandered over to the front gate where he said he'd meet Katrina, he lit a cigarette and leaned up against the nearest object he could find. The only people entering were Socs and a few out-of-towners saying how odd it was to find a rodeo in a city like New York. He had to give it to them though, when he thought long and hard about NYC, the word rodeo never came to mind.
Which was sad, the rodeo was one of the only places Sodapop could think or be free, not have to worry about keeping his job, or keeping the peace. Which is why he probably got real angry at Darry when he told him he could no longer ride, he wasn't just taking away bull riding he was taking away Sodapop's freedom.
In the distance he could hear people cheering, an announcer was declaring the winner of a barrel racing contest, and right after barrel racing was bull riding, Kat had better show her face soon or the show was going on with out her.
