As you all know, or can probably guess by now, Richard Plantagenet will be our first mayor played by an RPer. His rise to the top, for plotting purposes, is going to be expressed narratively (within the RPs and such). However, elections from now on, will be voted on and we will elect our mayor (yay, fun!). This is all you need to know about how that works.
1. What characters are eligible to become mayor?
A. Anyone who is a major leader or power player in the original canon. People who, in their canons, had a ton of power and were at the top of the top at some point. That means kings, queens, Zeus, whoever. So more likely than not elites and high class will probably be the ones eligible. Basically, if you're running for mayor, it has to make sense and be in character for you to do so.
2. How long can a character stay mayor?
A. An active character can stay mayor at least 2 months (a term). If someone else wants to run for mayor, a new mayor will not be announced until the end of those 2 months. If no one wants to run for mayor by the end of those two months, the term will continue until someone does. In otherwords, if no one wants the mayor seat, the current mayor stays mayor for as long as he/she wants.
If the current mayor is inactive during his term (without notice), in the rp narrative we will say that the mayor has resigned. If, at that point, only one person is interested in being mayor, that person will automatically take the seat. If two or more people are interested, we will conduct an election at the end of that month, announcing a new mayor on the 1st.
3. How many times can a character become mayor?
A. Unlimited. If you're a mayor once, then someone else becomes mayor, you can try to become mayor (and be re-elected) again and again if you want.
4. When and how can I announce that I want to run for mayor?
A. You can announce it anytime. First and foremost, PM an admin to make sure that you're eligible. When we give you the go-ahead, you can make a public announcement in the RP if you so wish.
5. When does campaigning start?
A. It depends on when an announcement to run is made. So say Richard becomes mayor for the months of July and August. Then John Doe comes along and announces in mid-July that he wants to run for mayor. Campaigns will start on August 1st, so by the time Richard's term is over, we'll know if we'll have a new mayor or not.
If an announcement is made at the beginning of august (like during the first week), campaigns will still begin right after that announcement is made, so again, by the time Richard's term is up, we'll know if we have a new mayor.
If an announcement is made in mid-august, then Richard will have another month to be mayor (through September), and the campaigns will "officially" start September 1st.
6. How long are campaigns?
A. Officially, 3 weeks (possibly more, depending). Officially, if campaigns start at the beginning of the month, you'll have about 3 weeks to campaign and the last week will be for voting.
7. What can we do during campaigns?
A. Be creative! Talk/make threads with influential people on the board to get their vote. Create ads (even negative ads about the other candidate (s) lol) in the NYTs. There can be a debate in the NYTs if candidates agree to it. Make press conferences/speeches. Publicity stunts, whatever you need to. Coerce, bribe, whatever lol Try to get people to endorse you. Try to get people to campaign with you. What ever you see fit
8. How does the voting work?
Around the time we have our Of the Month award voting, we'll have an election vote. Who ever wins that vote will become mayor. EVERYONE MUST VOTE IN CHARACTER. It is extremely important that you do so. This is to be fair. All the campaigning will be in character, so any choice you make will be your CHARACTER'S choice and not your personal choice. Of course, we'd all rather not have a tyrant in office, but if your character finds it beneficial for that tyrant to be in office, then vote in that direction.
9. What can a mayor DO in office and what does that mean for the other members?
This is the fun part!
Mayors, of course, can sign bills and make policies and decisions that affect characters in the RP.
Example of an IC Rule/Policy/Bill
The police are cracking down on stealing. Any person stealing, or suspected of stealing is going to jail at least temporarily. If a person comes to the police and names a suspect who they think might be stealing, that suspect will automatically be taken into custody until further notice.
ALL policies and rules MUST be approved by staff. So the mayor will run by his plans as mayor to an admin before implementing them.
Thats it! Any questions? Post em here!
