A small spurt of laughter that flowed with ease was a telling indication of the jovial mood in which these two women sat ensnared. Jane with her sweet, sedated nature and buoyant smile and Kitty with her jaunty spirit shining through her toothy, saccharine grin. Where at the conception of their enduring friendship her smile had been one, not contrived but unsure, now took another form entirely. It wasn’t so much aesthetic because now she could actually feel what she showed to the world. Genuine happiness that coursed through her like a drug, the most narcotic of emotions, and reached her eyes.
Kitty had wanted to arrange a meeting between the two causes of her renewed self for quite some time now. There was no denying the gratitude she felt towards both parties and she had long since considered it necessary for them to finally come face-to-face. None of those worries that vexed most women who introduced their significant other to their best friend were accounted for tonight. If Jane and Henry had been entirely different individuals than they were, perhaps she might have felt a sliver of apprehension. Fortunately, they were just plain Jane and doe-eyed Henry. No two opposing forces whose personalities would clash horrendously. They were, respectively, understanding, meek, and kind-hearted beyond what Kitty could grasp. Never a callous word was uttered by either of them, nothing that would plant the seed of doubt in her mind about the outcome of their first acquaintance. Their importance in her life could be analyzed for all it was worth, but the end result would always be that it was true. Jane’s friendship and Henry’s companionship meant more to her than she could express through mere sentiments alone. Without pause, she had made that known to both when she finally insisted upon this get-together. The meeting of the two forces in her life that kept her firmly rooted in an alternate reality in which there was no past to lament or future to fret about. Just the present in all of its heady tonics and the ones who made each day that much more bearable.
So there the two unlikely friends were, seated at a dimly lit booth adjacent to a reasonably sized window with blinds slightly drawn which offered a view of the city basking in its dusk glow, waiting on Henry to arrive. The original plan had been for him to collect both women from Jane’s apartment after they had finished getting ready for the evening, a task that had taken a tad longer than expected once Kitty had gotten into a bit of a fashionista frame of mind and dolled-up Jane, but Henry had complained about a pounding headache. It might’ve been the slightest hint of disappointment in her eyes when she understandingly offered up postponing the date until he felt able-bodied enough to follow through that caused him to concede, but whatever the reason, he’d agreed to continue on, the stipulation being that he would take the proper steps to remedy his headache by resting up and meeting them at Applebee’s instead. And so while they waited, Kitty and Jane forged an easy-going atmosphere.
“If you think that’s embarrassing, watch him react when I call him a leprechaun,” Kitty joked, glowing with infectious laughter. She lowered a look down at the wooden tabletop, umber locks tumbling over her shoulders and framing her grinning face, her slender neck bundled by the black scarf she wore. There was another difference; her attire.
Normally she was one to pull from her array of sultry and provocative wardrobe which mainly extended to dresses and skirts of a defining . . . taste, but tonight she had put together a look that possessed more of a tasteful tenor than what she normally outfitted herself in. Kitty looked almost well put together with the overall dark tones of her plum long-sleeved shirt, charcoal grey trench coat, trendy boots of the same hue, and the only pair of “jeans” she owned. In short, there was no revealing of her true nightly occupation.
Running her fingers along the grooves in the table, the two were interrupted by a cheery voice belonging to a blonde, pixie-haired woman who settled in front of them two menus. “Welcome to Applebee’s, ladies. I’ll give you some time to decide on what to order, but while you wait, what would you like to drink?”
