Post by THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO on Mar 12, 2011 23:46:13 GMT -5
Tag: Claudius, Richard, Hector "I am doing well, sir, as I hope you are.... Hector Tormei is indeed a mayorial candidate; personally I think his campaign is off to a flying start."Monte Cristo returned Claudius' smile. Claudius seemed pleasant enough, and not averse to idle conversation. "Thank you, sir. I've been quite well. I will have to learn more about Mr. Tormei's candidacy, I'm afraid. I've never been one to follow politics. However, I suspect the upcoming race will be quite interesting, at the very least." At that moment, he spotted the arrival of another guest, one he had not expected to see at the event, given the circumstances. Nonetheless, he was quite happy, as usual, to see Richard. The mayor, with his usual self-assuredness, went straight to Hector and greeted him. They exchanged words in a fairly diplomatic manner, without causing much of a scene aside from the one Richard's mere presence had inspired. Since there was nothing particularly serious happening between the two men, Monte Cristo decided to remain out of their conversation for the moment. He was not sure whether being publicly supportive of Richard- which Monte Cristo would wind up being in any case, as the man was a close acquaintance of his- would be helpful to anyone involved. Then Penelope interrupted their small group, and the count recalculated the possibility of the evening being shot to hell. The odds of that had increased slightly. "Speaking of politics," he half-joked to Claudius. "This should prove a telling encounter." He hoped Richard would not do anything to hurt his chances in the race, but he was not eager to jump into their conversation and try to minimize the damage either. [ooc: Nessie- didn't know if you were keeping Claudius in the thread, but I haven't had anyone else to reply to- feel free to have him exit if you were planning to.]

"Thank you, sir. I've been quite well. I will have to learn more about Mr. Tormei's candidacy, I'm afraid. I've never been one to follow politics. However, I suspect the upcoming race will be quite interesting, at the very least."
Claudius nodded; interesting was just the word for it. He was somewhat surprised that Monte Cristo wasn't one to follow politics but decided it was best not to voice that opinion.
Eager to assist his old friend, Claudius was about to explain to the count what he knew of his friend's candidacy and his platform. It was as he was about to speak he noticed the direction in which the man was looking, following it accordingly with his own eyes.
Mayor Plantagenet was here.
To say Claudius was surprised would be an understatement, yet he surprise quickly faded as he realized what Hector meant by inviting him; to show there were no hard feelings between them despite their rivalry for the top job. Very clever indeed.
"Speaking of politics, this should prove a telling encounter."
Claudius chuckled. "You could say that again," he replied, his gaze still on the two rivals (neither of whom, he noticed, looked all that pleased).
ooc: Nope, Claudius is still around. (:

Tag: Who ever's talking to Hector, I've lost count Hector politely waded through the questions and the inquiries. It was quite suffocating, everything that was going on. Hector pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. "Please, please," Hector held his hand up, trying to gather everyone's attention. "I'm afraid I need to step out for some air, I find it a tad stuffy in here at the moment. If you'd all find me later on in the vening, I'd be happy to talk with all of you one by one," "Penelope, may I steal you away for two moments, we need to discuss something," Hector offered his arm to Penny nonchalantly. He needed to make sure that she didn't foul up the rest of evening. Her cheek would get both of them into trouble. "Gentlemen," Hector nodded to his guests as he exited. [ooc: So sorry for the length and the wait. I didn't want to hold up the thread any longer so I'm isolating Hector]

Penelope cringed as Tormei dragged her away again. To be honest, she hadn't been forced to folow him, but there wasn't any sense in refusing to go, so she latched on and he led her outside. She pulled herself free just as they door to the museum closed behind them.
"Aren't you acting a little prematurely, Hector?" She asked, annoyed at being yanked around like a rag doll. "I was just being polite and iintroducing myself to the mayor."
She adjusted her posture, folding arms across her chest and giving him a hard look before letting a small grin pass over her face.
"I won't need to cause any trouble anyway, not with hum here anyway. You two are bound to start bickering like an old married couple. I'm just staying close and waiting so I can watc the spectacle in amused silence. I won't have to do a thing."
With that, she began to walk past Tormei to the door and head inside to rejoin the party.

Tag: Penny [/right] Hector moved his body to block Penny's exit smoothly leveled her with a look. "Miss Penelope, I would like to have a civil conversation with you before either of us rejoins the festivities," Hector was tired of her petulant behavior, especially about everything she had said about being mature. "But before that, I'd like to point out that Richard and I are both mature enough to keep the encounter civil, I assure you," Hector shuffled back and resumed a more relaxed stance. After pausing awkwardly, Hector spoke again. "I don't believe I've mentioned it yet, but you look lovely. Your dress is quite stunning," And if she weren't quite so young, she would be equally as beautiful. But her age made it difficult for Hector to simply enjoy her appearance. He instead saw everything that came with 26 years of age. Overblown ideals, naive hopes, relatively self-centered, and always on a soapbox. If those things weren't present, Hector would probably quite enjoy Penelope's company. As it were, she was 26 years old and had the maturity and mental faculty of a teenager from what he was able to witness thus far.

Penelope stood rooted to the spot, not quite sure what to say. An incomprehensible look marred her otherwise bright face as she cocked her head to one side in curiosity at Tormei.
"Thank you...I guess." She managed to push out her reply in a quiet whisper. She took a deep breathe and continued, just as softly as before.
"You don't think much of me, do you? Just a pretty, frivolous little thing. Maybe I am frivolous. I probably am, I won't deny it. But if I'm frivolous, it's only for want of happy things, a smile. I live for being happy and content. I hate confronting problems, I won't lie...but you seem to need them, the happy things."
She sighed at her own miandering thoughts, and smiled tiredly at Tormei.
"I'm sorry if I've been so tiresome. Everybody's been driving me up the wall. I knew I shouldn't have gone with Faustus, that creep. He's oggling some blonde now, seems to have forgotten me, not that I mind. I was planning on staying as far away from him as possible anyway."

Tag: Reed, Faustus, Irene... etc Adrienne paused. She didn't quite know how to take Reed's wanting to leave. Maybe she was embarrassing him. She pursed her lips and swirled the remnants of her champagne, wrestling with the notion. She did want to leave. She wanted to take the out for purely selfish reasons -- but she didn't want him to want to leave unless his reasons were purely sexual. She glanced between Reed and Faustus for a moment, the tip of her tongue tracing her upper lip. "We... should probably go," she said at last, though it was tentative and grudging. "I... have a deadline, tomorrow," she lied, and shrugged one shoulder delicately. She didn't have anything of the sort. She shifted her weight on the balls of her feet and glanced at the door. Dammit she thought. She shouldn't be pandering to him this way. He wanted to bring her to this thing, he wasn't allowed to feel smothered just because she was there. Her jaw tightened imperceptibly.

For Cathy Victor seemed to take that as a compliment, giving her a charming grin. "Thank you very much. I must have seen you at another party or something... I go around them a lot." He shrugged lightly, still smiling down at her. He seemed to forgive her little rage, and he had found it amusing, but he also found that she was becoming increasingly annoying to deal with. A spoiled heiress or something, no doubt, with that temper; a slut, no doubt, with that kind of defensive reflex. His mind wandered a little over their conversation, glancing at her neck every now and again, though he tried not to think too much about... it... right now. Victor had promised himself that he would enjoy his night, as opposed to just thinking about killing every woman he saw. He could learn to respect them someday, he thought wistfully as he listened to her talk through him. His champagne glass was nearly empty, and he sensed that if he was going to continue talking to this girl, he would need a full glass. "Excuse me for just a moment," he said when she took a little break in her chatter. "Just going to get another drink." Victor flashed her a reassuring smile and then slipped past her, taking a glass from one of the servers. He stood there a moment as he sampled it, glancing around- but then he stopped short in the middle of a sip. No way. That couldn't be... Adrienne, could it? Surely not. She worked at a magazine, he knew, but was she really invited? And then, of course, he spotted her date. Was that Reed Armstong? Oh, good god! Victor was not the biggest fan of him, and it amused him that his friend had actually fallen for the man's charm. ((Victor, you hypocrite! And I'm sooooo sorry, Kuku, for being late. Feel free to crucify me or something terrible like that. And sorry if I totally godmodded Cathy, I just needed to have him see Ade before she split. ))

Tag: Adrienne and surrounding companions Reed was slowly feeling overwhelmed himself over the gala event, and suddenly tired at his high class bunch of people. He enjoyed the influence and affluence, and the perks it provided, but then came the sticky situation of his circle of enemies. His ex-wife. The people he'd stepped on. The people loyal to his father... Reed was ready to go. Adrienne's words brought a smile from his lisp and Reed gave a healthy wink to Faustus. "It was good seeing you this evening, my friend," he offered, his arm snaking about Adrienne's waist. "Take good care of that date on your arm." Though there was still something oh so familiar with her face. Oh well. Reed turned and guided Adrienne through the room of people, His arm anchored around her waist possessively. She would have had to have been opaque and blind to assume that he was embarrassed of her, but then again, she was a stupid woman for a very intelligent woman sometimes. Reed fetched her coat and slid it onto her shoulders, a slight air of possession about his actions as he placed a gentle kiss on her neck with a smirk. "You were definitely the prettiest one out there tonight," he crooned as he hailed for his car, aiming to take her back to her apartment and spend a great deal of time exploring everything under the dress that she had so primly shielded from view tonight. To say he wasn't eager to be around her, eager to love her--at least physically--and eager to be seen with her, was a gross miscalculation.

The girl really could just go on and on about nothing. "You only need the "happy things", as you call them, when you are content enough with your life. As for frivolity, you can be frivolous without being bothersome. Such is what I encourage you to emulate tonight," Hector knew that even though he did not attend the affair with Penelope, the newspapers would probably fixate on it. The last thing he needed was a nonexistent scandal to deal with but it was inevitable, he knew it. "Why on earth would you even attend with Faustus? He's a pig," Just because Hector worked with the doctor didn't mean he had to like him.

Penelope grimaced at the mention of Faustus' name.
"That wasn't one of my shining moments, was it? I came because I thought I could do some campaigning and convince some of your wealthier guests to donate to a foundation I'm a part of. Improving poor communities and the helping the people who live in them, that kind of thing. I guess maybe this wasn't the best way to go about it."
Her grimace changed to a sheepish grin, then to a smirk as a thought came to her.
"How do you put up with that man's skirt-chasing ego? He's impossible. It's a wonder that he still attracts women with his personality shining through like that." She laughed quietly to herself until she noticed Tormei looking uneasy.
"What is it? You think someone's watching?" She asked, wondering if tabloid photographers were around, something she had not even considered before. The last thing she wanted was her parents seeing a candid photo of her with a man old enough to be her father.

"How do you put up with that man's skirt-chasing ego? He's impossible. It's a wonder that he still attracts women with his personality shining through like that."
Hector shrugged his shoulders and replied blandly that it was all business. The majority of the people invited to the soiree were there because of 'business'. Claudius excepted. "I'm not exactly his type, so I don't have the problem of jealousy. Though that blonde that I saw him with is perfect for him. They deserve each other," Hector had seen Irene Adler, that ignorant twat who had approached him earlier in the year. He still couldn't stand the sight of her.
"It's always a possibility. The photo journalists are ruthless," Hector glanced around as well. He couldn't see anyone but that didn't mean that they were alone. Which was why Hector kept a respectable distance between himself and Penelope. "And, it's nothing against you personally, but the scandal a picture of us would cause is far too much trouble at this point. I've worked very hard to have a clean election and last minute accusations that I am a cradle robber would ruin that shining achievement,"

Penelope put her hands on her hips in mock petulence.
"My life wouldn't be all roses either if a picture of us got around. Perhaps I shoul go?" She asked the question quietly, and turned her head to the door, wondering if things would be safer inside. Her curiosity got the better of her and she turned back to Tormei.
"You're not like what I imagined on that chat site you know. How does a man like you end up in a chatroom anyway? You don't look like someone who do something because someine else said it was a good idea."
She stood there, studying hisface for any sign of the person she'd met online.

Hector chuckled quietly and nodded. "Yes, I can see how you think that. But when a trusted friend, a member of your family," A different kind of family, but a family none the less. "Advises you on something, you take them at their word," Hector glanced back at the party. He should return.
"I think we both must go back inside. After all, I am hosting and I'm being remiss in my duties," Hector bowed a little at the waist. "Penelope," He said by way of salutation and motioned for her to enter in front of him.
Dear Lord, now he's going to have to deal with whatever idiot saw them. And Hector could almost bet it would be Richard or Claudius.

Penelope smiled at Tormei's politeness.
"You're definitely not from my generation." She quipped as she smiled and floated in ahead of him. "Thank you. It's refreshing to be treated politely here. I think you just brightened up my evening."
She headed back into the gallery and began silently studying the paintings as she didn't feel the desire to try and strike up a conversation at the moment. Plucking a glass of champagne from a passing server, she tilted her head to the side, trying to make sense of a canvas seemingly comprised of a jigsaw of geometric shapes all looped and jumbled together in different colours.
