Hi, my alias is Bick and this is my first character. I found this site via the RPG Gateway directory. Something you should know about me is that I live in Africa, haven't rp'ed for about 10 years (so I'll be a little rusty), and I hate to waste hours in front of a box (basically, no tv or internet at home, haha).
Jiao "Jo" Mahr
| Middle Class |
| Middle Class |
Canon: Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott
Custom Title: Josephine March
PHYSICAL
Age: 22 years old
Gender: female
Race: Asian
Appearance: First impressions of Jiao don't usually make a lasting impact, and her tom-boy tendencies usually means that she doesn't dress to impress, favouring comfort over style. While she openly admits that she's not pretty (nose too wide and lips too full), there is an underlying quality that makes her quite attractive when the light is just right and her mood is gentle. Certainly not particularly feminine, Jiao did, however, developed an understated grace in her movements when she finally mastered the long limbs that came with her height.
Height: 5'8"
Weight/Body Type: Slim/Athletic

Play By: Vanessa Mae
PERSONALITY
General personality: Jiao's one driving force is the desire to be free. Free from the cultural expectations placed on her gender. Free to do as she pleases, go where she pleases, and learn as she pleases. Secretly, she wishes that she was born a boy. Realising that that will never happen, Jiao has resigned herself to being fiercly independent, outspoken, daring, and anti-social (when it suits her). She is the type of person who, when an idea has struck, goes out and makes things happen. Unfortunately, she might step on a few toes or ruffle some feathers along the way, particularly those belonging to people who don't know her well enough to realise that she doesn't mean any harm.
Gaining access into her inner circle will reveal a Jiao who is loyal, generous, and principled. This, however, is not something that is easily achieved. Jiao would say that this is because she already has all the friends she needs with all the strange characters and wild adventures going on in her head. The truth though, is that many simply give up trying due to her unpredictable moods and her ability to see through most people's pretenses to their true motives.
Despite all that she may set out to achieve (whether good or bad), she knows that she can rely on her family (in particular her mother and father) to be her anchor and help her in the right direction should she stray too far wrong.
Quotes, frequently used expressions:
"If I were a boy I'd want to look just like that." ~Jo March
"You should have been a lawyer, Miss March." ~Mr. Mayer
"I should have been a great many things, Mr. Mayer." ~Jo March
Likes:
- Her family
- Writing dramatic stories and plays
- Reading
- Apples
- Being productive
Dislikes:
- Generalizing or having assumptions made about her and others
- Indecision or procrastination
- Sappy romantic gestures
- Alcohol and specifically drunk people
- Brussel Sprouts
Strengths: Devoted to her family and close friends, she'll try to move heaven and earth if that would mean helping them. Independent and outspoken, she takes pride in getting things done. She doesn't just stand by and take it when she or others are treated unfairly.
Weaknesses: Her stubborn nature tends to get her into trouble a lot deeper than would be wise, simply because she's trying to prove a point. Her anti-social tendencies, coupled with her temper, make her quite difficult to get along with. She can be pretty self-absorbed at times, especially when her creativity is in overdrive.
BACKGROUND
Family:
- Mother, "Marmee"
- Father, "Robert"
- Older sister, "Meg"
- Younger sisters, "Beth" and "Amy"
- Aunt, "Aunt March"
Education: Currently doing her 2nd year at NYU, she is majoring in English, and minoring in History.
Occupation/Job: When she isn't studying or writing short stories and plays to try to sell to magazines or small theater companies, she tutors students in English and History, with the odd babysitting job thrown in for good measure.
Image: Jiao still believes that one day she'll become a great novelist if she had the time available to commit fully to her writing. Her frustration at only having twenty-four hours available to her in a day, with so many of life's necessities and intrusions stealing precious time away from her when inspiration hits, is unfortunately often expressed to innocent by-standers who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. When the storm passes, she does try to correct any wrongs that she caused (if and when she remembers them), which often leave people unsure of where they stand with her. And quite frankly, she loves being unpredictable.
History: According to Jiao, growing up in New England was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Though considered poor by the world's standards, her childhood home was always clean and so filled with love that she considered herself rich in the ways that truly mattered. Her creativity was encouraged by both parents, and she loved to fill her summers creating new plays for her and her sisters to put on for them.
When "Laurie" moved in with his grandfather next door, Jiao found in him both a kindred spirit, and a best friend. Her affection for him often led to her referring to him as "her boy" over the years. Unfortunately, this led "Laurie" to declaring his love and proposing to Jiao upon her graduating from high school. She realised that they are too similar, especially when it comes to their faults, and declined his proposal perhaps a little too harshly, not wanting him to foster any hope that she will change her mind if he is patient and/or persistant.
Frustrated, and a little hurt, that he would try to change the great friendship that they already had, Jiao turns to "Marmee" for assistance. "Marmee" helps Jiao to secure a job as an 'au pair' in New York for two little boys. Jiao loves the job, but loves New York more, determining to stay on to pursue her studies here when the family she was working for decide to move away.
THE SAMPLE
In Character Sample:
Her white cap pulled low over her eyes, her hair scrunched up beneath it, Jiao looked like she'd just survived a tussle with a whirlwind and won. The rug was becoming more and more uncomfortable beneath her elbows as she continued to lay on the floor reading over the piece that she'd been working on all morning. This was not the time to stop now, especially since she was so near to finishing.
Dark eyes moved quickly back and forth as she continued to read. As she turned the last page, she bit on one side of her full lower lip, moving it slowly back and forth between her teeth until the last word was read. Reaching for the rest of the script, and taking her time to arrange the pages, a slow smile started to tug at the corner of her lips. Putting the pages back on the floor, she rolled onto her back and could no longer contain the scream of joy which bubbled just below the surface.
"Aaahahhhhaahhhahahhahahaaaaahhhhhh! Yes, baby! Now that's what I'm talking about!" Long legs kicking rapidly in the air as though she were on a bicycle and her fists punching out into nothing as she let out her feeling of satisfaction for a job well done.
After a short moment, she laughed and let her arms and legs drop exhaustedely to the floor as the toll of all those hours of concentration finally broke through. Her stomach rumbled softly, reminding her that she hadn't even had breakfast this morning and the lunch hour was long past too.
"Okay, let's go hunting." A quick hand on the papers she had just finished, she pushed up from the floor. Her hair tumbled over her shoulders, the hat lying forgotten on the rug, she walked over to her desk to set them down before turning towards the kitchen area of her simple single bedroom apartment. Did she remember to go shopping this week? She would find out soon enough.
