CITY POLITICS !
Yes, Rewritten City has a political system, law enforcement, and elections! The mayor of the city, of course, can sign bills and make policies and decisions that affect characters in the RP. Once mayor, ALL policies and laws MUST be approved by staff before implementing.
You can be a part of the political system too!
CURRENT IC CITY POLICIES !
SIGNED AND PUT IN PLACE BY MAYOR TORMEI
- It is now legal to carry a concealed weapon. However, any person wishing to do so must go through an extensive screening process and be certified by a government run branch composed mostly of retired police officers.
*Any persons found violating this law (ie skipping the screening process, cheating during the screening) will be charged with a charge equivalent to aggravated assault that may result in a large fine as well as a jail/prison sentence. - Smoking is allowed in common areas, but only where marked.
- The top 15% of the population will now bear the majority of the tax load, anyone earning under $30,000 will earn a $200 subsidy.
- Abandoning an animal or neglecting an animal is a $700-$1,500 fine and/or jail time.
- Any character caught stealing will be sentenced to jail time.
- Prostitution is now legal and is taxed. All prostitutes must employ themselves at a designated house and undergo monthly health checks.
LAW & PUNISHMENT !
- Step One: The Police Confrontation
We have a police account that anyone can use (more info on how to login in the For Members section). If you stumble upon an open thread where one of the above policies are violated, feel free to log into the police account anonymously and RP an authority figure catching/arresting/confronting the offender. They don't have to be the police but maybe a bystander threatening to call the police.
If the thread is unopened and you spot an offense, PM the offending character with the police account anonymously, asking if it would affect the plot if the police entered the thread. If not, enter the thread. If so, create a new short thread where the character is questioned/confronted shortly after the events of the thread are over (this can be 2-4 posts long). - Step Two: The Punishment
It is up to the RPer controlling the police to decide what action needs to be taken (maybe the character is really cooperative or explains themselves well and the police lets them off clean. Maybe the character is really offensive and needs to be arrested). - Step Three: Police Records
When you have entered a thread or have created a thread with an offender as the police, report the offense in the Police Reports thread. From there staff will deal with the rest. - Step Four: Judgment
If the confrontation ended with an arrest, the offender will be PMed (once the offense was put in police records) and a consequence will be rendered. The consequence could end up being just a fine, or a night/few days in jail (which may or may not be RPed) or jail time/trial. It also depends on how likely the character has access to legal representation. These consequences count in RPs.
ELECTIONS & BECOMING MAYOR !
- Mayor Eligibility
Anyone who is a major leader or power player in the original canon (or has worked their way up to being one) can run for mayor. That means kings, queens, Zeus, whoever. So more likely than not elites and high class will probably be the ones eligible. If you're running for mayor, it has to make sense and be in character for you to do so. A character can become mayor as many times as he/she wants. - A Full Term
An active character can stay mayor at least 2 months (a term). If someone else wants to run for mayor, a new mayor will not be announced until the end of those 2 months. If no one wants to run for mayor by the end of those two months, the term will continue until someone does. In otherwords, if no one wants the mayor seat, the current mayor stays mayor for as long as he/she wants.
If the current mayor is inactive during his term (without notice), in the rp narrative, we will say that the mayor has resigned. If, at that point, only one person is interested in being mayor, that person will automatically take the seat. If two or more people are interested, we will conduct an election at the end of that month, announcing a new mayor on the 1st. If no one is interested, we will have a generic "John Doe" mayor until someone does. - To Run for Mayor...
First and foremost, PM an admin to make sure that you're eligible. When we give you the go-ahead, you can make a public announcement in the RP however you wish. - Campaigns
Campaigning officially starts when ever the announcement of two opponents running for mayor has been made. Campaigns officially last 3 weeks (possibly more, depending on the candidates preferences). Candidates can talk/make threads with influential people on the board to get their vote. They create ads (even negative ads about the other candidate (s)). There can be a debate if candidates agree to it. They can make press conferences/speeches, publicity stunts - oerce, bribe, whatever works. Try to get people to endorse or campaign. There are many options for campaigns. - Elections
Around the time we have our Of the Month award voting, we'll have an in character election vote. Who ever wins that vote will become mayor.
