REWRITTEN CITY !

SOME FAQs !
- Why don't you accept fantasy-based canons?
It kind of depends on what canons you're talking about. Generally, the point of Rewritten City is to reinvent classics and make them fresh and modern as if the characters were living in New York City today. That means, things should be realistic. There are, however, a few fantasy canons that we thought could be worked in with a realistic plot, including Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland. - You say this site is about reinvention, but why is RENT the only canon not being reinvented? Why is it even in the list of canons?
RENT is the main example of what we're looking for in reinvention. The characters of RENT were based on a 1896 opera called La Bohème. The musical and movie are products of a very clever and relevant reinvention of a classic work, which is exactly what we want to achieve in Rewritten City. - Can we request new canons or apply for characters that are from works not on the canon list?
Yes, you can request to have new canons added to the list. HOWEVER we highly encourage first time members to create characters that are already on the canon list, as we have worked hard and chosen each canon with care. - Can my character's base come from multiple canons?
In certain circumstances, yes. For example, Dr. Doolittle and Dr. Moreau are one on this site. However you must PM an admin to discuss why you think you need to claim both canons for your character. - I really want to join this site, but I don't know every little detail about these canons. OR...I'm not exactly a theater or literature buff, but I love this site and want to join. Can I?
Of course you can. We understand that not everyone knows the ins and outs of some of these canons an thats fine. If you want to join, just do a little wikipedia search about the canon you're interested in. Put it this way, you don't have to know the metaphorical symbolism and social/political contexts of Romeo & Juliet to play Tybalt. - Can I use such and such playby for my character instead of the playby from the movie?
Absolutely.
PICKING A CHARRY !
BE SURE TO SHIFT THROUGH THE FOLLOWING THINGS AND MAKE A LIST. THEN, NARROW DOWN THE LIST TO ONLY THE CHARACTERS YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF RPING. REMEMBER: YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERY SINGLE THING ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS TO PLAY THEM - YOU WON'T BE PLAYING THEM BY THE BOOKS ANYWAY. ALSO REMEMBER WE ACCEPT ORIGINAL CHARACTERS TOO, SO THAT IS AN OPTION.

What are some classic books, legends, myths, characters, heroes (in a literary sense), operas, or plays that you remember enjoying in school or in general? - Wishlist
People have roles for their own plots that they would love to have filled - maybe some of those will strike your fancy.
REWRITING A CHARRY !
YOUR CHARACTER REWRITE SHOULD HAVE THREE THINGS:
WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IS THE CHARACTER LIVING HIS/HER LIFE LIKE IN THE ORIGINAL BUT IN TODAY'S WORLD. FIRST DO A QUICK GOOGLE/WIKI SEARCH ON YOUR CHARACTER TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY IF NEEDED - MAYBE EVEN READ/WATCH THE ORIGINAL AGAIN. THEN ACKNOWLEDGE THESE THINGS AS YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR REWRITE:
- Achieving Diversity
This is in regards to race, background, and orientation for our characters. We want Rewritten City to actually represent a city, all different types of people! So think about that when you're reinventing. If appropriate, maybe character typically portrayed as one ethnicity or orientation may work interestingly as another. - Age
A teenager in the past and a teenager now will be quite different. Think about how age effects the character. Would it be appropriate to change the age? If so, how would that change the character? - Appearance
Appearances clue us in to personality. When you think about a face claim, think about how a modern day version of your character would dress him/herself. In the original, if he dressed 'upperclass', how would that translate in today's terms? Are there things you can exaggerate, modify in the way this character presents him/herself? - Profession:
Think about what your character did for a living. What would that translate into now? Be specific! If a character was a merchant in the original, you could possibly translate this into a 'salesperson' nowadays. But what kind of salesperson? Door to door? Car dealership? Online? Also, Be creative! If your character was a king, perhaps he could hold a governmental position, or be head honcho of a major corporation. Maybe your character was a gentleman and really had no 'profession' at all...that gives you more room to take liberties. Maybe, even, your character calls for a different profession than in the original. Maybe the character's profession in the original had no baring on the character whatsoever. - Personality
What personality does this character have? Drama queen? Geek? Comedian? Be mindful, you probably won't be able to change the personality traits too much so that you keep the 'integrity/essence' of the original character. But how would these traits affect the life of someone in present day? For instance, what happens to people in today's society who are obsessed with idealistic love? Who are Machiavellian? Who are insane? You can also ask yourself: If this is what drove/motivated my character back then...what would would the equivalent be now? - History
Perhaps your character's history is heavily influenced by the social implications of the time. Maybe your character was a certain race, or female and had no rights. Now that things have changed, how would this character's story play out? Alternatively, there are some social pressures and societal issues today that can still effect your character, maybe not in the exact same way, but would certainly create a parallel.
Does the history of your character remind you of a similar story that's going on today? For instance, in Romeo & Juliet, do families/group not rival in today's society? How is it different? How is it the same? If you are 'exiled' in today's terms, what could that mean? - The Supernatural
Perhaps there's a supernatural or some unnatural element in your story (Dorian Gray, Charles Dickens, for example). How would this supernatural, abnormal thing be translated in today's terms and could this abnormality be considered a superstition now? For instance, ghosts, potions, hypnotism, prophecies, magic, and spells could all be considered things today that people are superstitious about in real life. E.i, Potions could equal experimental medicine. Perhaps that supernatural thing doesn't have to be supernatural at all. Perhaps you could achieve the after effects by rewriting it in a new way.
