New York Detective Shot in Line of Duty
Just thirteen hours ago the NYPD embarked on a dangerous operation near the shipyards at New York Harbor. Undercover sources dictated that local drug bosses were using abandoned warehouses as temporary Methamphetamine laboratories. Local forces infiltrated the lower Manhattan residence where they promptly arrested half a dozen men for drug possession and trafficking. A firefight broke out minutes later when several prominent criminals attempted to fight their way out of police custody. The raid resulted in seven deaths and more than a dozen wounded. Among them was Detective Olivia Athos; the only police officer seriously injured in the fray.
Detective Athos led an assault team to the second floor while the rest of the force dealt with assailants on the ground floor. Her team dispatched four armed men between the basement steps and the second floor landing. They engaged in combat with several men wielding miscellaneous household objects; anything they could get their hands on. One officer remarked, “He came at me with a crowbar!” The men were subdued and handcuffed before the team continued on down the hallway. Athos was the first to round the corner.
“You should have seen the look in her eye; it was like she knew what was going to happen.” Detective Dumas reported. “She stopped, pushed me back around the corner, and then the shots rang out.” It’s uncertain who the gunman was; by the time Dumas and the rest of the team got around the corner all they could see was the shadow of a figure climbing up the metal ladder to the roof and a pool of blood around a fallen Athos. She’d been shot three times in the chest and twice in the left shoulder. A regulation bullet proof vest prevented the three 9mm caliber rounds from penetrating her heart but, not the other two.
Detective Athos was transported to The New York Presbyterian Hospital immediately concluding the raid on the warehouse. Officer’s Grey and Hastings were treated at the scene for minor burns and Detective Groves had two broken ribs. Eight men were arrested at the conclusion of yesterday’s events. All will be facing drug possession and trafficking charges. Three will be charged with resistance of arrest, two for arson, and three for the attempt to kill an officer. No official statement has been given on the Detective Athos’ current status however, sources within the hospital suggest she is resting comfortably after undergoing surgery late last evening.
