00V. description
Zander has presence. He was raised to believe that every eye would be on him at all times, so he stands with a very straight posture, and walks with pride and purpose. He holds himself with importance, but with his friends and family he is warm and welcoming. Often he can be found in a suit when he is working. However, on his own time, he will wear t-shirts, and button up short sleeve shirts because they are comfortable. Recently, he has taken to wearing his blond hair a little longer than he would have in the past, and he’s found he likes the look of having a bit of facial hair. His smile is bright, his eyes tend to sparkle with happiness and mirth, but when he is displeased, his eyes flash with anger – the only indication he will give that he is unhappy before he will let his stormy temper loose.
00I. overall personality
Zander is easy enough to get along with. He was raised to be polite and to be courteous to people, so he is. Generally he even likes people for the company they provide. However, he never feels as if he can be himself with the people he associates with. He always has to be the face of the company, the heir to the family. Thus he has two sides – the side most people see, and the side he shows his family. However, even his personality around his family adheres to their expectations, so even Zander wonders who he really is between all the bullshit he has to shovel.
He is a natural protector. He has a strong loyalty to his family and would do anything to keep them safe and happy. Thus he honestly doesn’t mind when his sisters come running to him with their boyfriend woes, or when his mother has a “crisis” only he can solve by dropping everything and visiting her. He feels strong knowing he can be strong for them.
When he is not pleased, his anger builds until he snaps. His temper is short lived, but very fierce. He feels moody and is growly after the initial confrontation has passed, often feeling bad for his behavior later on. He will not admit that he was wrong, though. It goes against his grain to do so.
Zander is happiest when he is in the air. He feels like there are no responsibilities upon him, so he can relax. He likes to fly planes as often as possible to achieve this feeling. Sometimes he amuses himself by putting on his best New Orleans accent and pulls the leg of people he meets, but that's rare.
Now knowing he was adopted, he feels lost sometimes. He has this hope inside him that things will make sense if he knows where he comes from, and until then he's in a sort of limbo. He's a Devereux, but he's not, so he has the mindset that he can float between the two until he has something definite.
0II. strengths
Zander is a rock. When others are feeling like they need someone to cling to, he is there. He kept his family together, in this respect.
He is a natural leader. When he speaks, people listen, and do as they’re told.
He has a strong sense of right and wrong, and he is very firm in these beliefs, using them to guide his decisions.
He is quite clever and sees right through people when they try to pull the wool over his eyes. It makes him a good businessman.
III. weaknesses
Zander avoids confrontation until he is actually angry, and by this point he can be quite the force to be reckoned with. Afterward, he is grumbly and moody until he calms down.
He does not spook easily, so he often dives into situations without thinking the consequences through. Thus, he fears he has any number of bastard children out there.
He has always done what was expected of him, thus he’s never really done anything he wanted for himself.
He also has a terrible memory for people and faces. He often has to be reminded of whom he is meeting that day. However, he has an excellent academic memory, so he can easily manage business.
0IV. goals
He wants to find out who he is and where he came from. To do that, he needs to find his birth family. After that, he really just wants to start a family of his own because he believes this will balance out his life.

0II. overall history
Zander was born to parents who quite simply did not want him. He wasn’t even given a name on his birth certificate, simply shipped off to wherever it is that unwanted babies go by some do-good social worker. Said social worker would write in his file that it was unlikely he would have survived in his home environment, as his father was a very violent drunk. A foster home was the best way to go. There he was nicknamed “Smiley,” as he still had yet to be given a name. That was where he was found by the Devereuxs – a young, rich couple who had been told they couldn’t have children. Milly Devereux was taken with Zander’s blue eyes and cheery disposition. She was unaware that the boy’s twin brother was also up for adoption; otherwise they would have taken the set, as it were. The paperwork was quickly taken care of and Zander was given a name and a new home.
The first seven years of his life were largely uneventful. His father was from old money, and his mother spent heaps of it on Zander - her baby boy. He wanted for nothing. The family spent most of its time in New York, seeing as his grandfather had started a company in the city, which Zee now ran, but they often spent time in New Orleans where the extended family reigned. The boy was happy and healthy, well schooled, and well mannered. He was quick to laugh and play.
However, being an only child with only his mother and the housekeeper, Mrs. McCallum, for company was a lonely life. His parents had begun to look into adopting older children for him to play with when they discovered that they were pregnant. Milly declared it a miracle and started dragging the family to church every Sunday to "praise Jesus for giving them this gift". Seven months later, Sidda and Jean were born. The two dark haired girls were perfect, looking like they actually belonged to their dark haired parents. Instead of feeling displaced, Zander helped out with the girls, feeling as though he had helped raise them as much as his parents had.
When he was eighteen, Zander graduated school and took a year off to see the world. He traveled to Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia before coming home. He went off to university – Harvard, like the Devereux men before him – for a business degree. He wasn’t all that certain he liked business, but it was what his family did. He had to understand money and commodities to run the family company one day. If he had a choice, he would have wanted to do something he loved, like flying. Zander had discovered a passion for being at the controls of small airplanes, seeing the far off sights, and forgetting his worries when he was in the air. School was stifling. It demanded his best and he constantly had to remind himself why he was putting for the effort. However, he did find time for fun. He did his fair share of partying and had a slew of girls around his studies. He is aware he probably even has children out there, but he has never met any of them, and the women are all drunken blurs in the rear-view mirror of his memories.
Upon graduation, he was hired to work under his father directly, being groomed to take over the business in the future. It would be five years later that his father was involved in a car accident that would cause brain damage. He was deemed fit to return to work, but his personality had severely shifted. He was snappy where he had been jovial before, and his decisions weren’t thought out. The stockholders in the company decided it was time to promote a new head of the company, and placed Zander in that position at only twenty-eight.
It was around the same time that his mother thought he should do the sensible thing and marry. So he seriously began to date. However, every time he thought he was ready to pop the question, he got caught up at work and missed out on the relationship, or he got caught up in the lives of his sisters – helping them pick out schools when they graduated, fixing their problems for them, being the shoulder to cry on when they had poor relationships themselves – and no woman played second fiddle to that.
Before he knew it, he was thirty-five, unmarried, and standing at the graveside of his father. The man had been in homecare for eight years before a massive stroke took his life. Now the true head of the family, Zander was in charge of everything. He decided that his first order of business was to figure out his father’s mess of personal files. It was while going through these files that he found something disturbing – his adoption papers. His mother, quite “delicate” because of the loss of her beloved Zee, sniffed and dabbed her eyes as she showed her son pictures of him in his foster home before they had found him, explaining the whole story about him and his twin brother. They never wanted him to feel like he wasn’t family, so they never told him the truth, letting him believe that he had been born a Devereux.
This switched Zander’s whole view on life. No matter how loved he had been, he now knew that he was someone else’s child – whether they had wanted him or not. He wasn’t a Devereux by birth, and he didn’t want to be held back by all the expectations he had always believed were on him because of his family name. So he stepped back from the day to day running of the company, only signing off on what he was legally obligated to preside over, and sold five percent of his stock so that he was well set for cash. He began the search for his other family.
Now he spends most of his time working odd jobs in the city, going into the office to sign off on projects, catering to his beloved adopted mother and sisters’ whims, and looking under rocks for pieces of his past.
III. sample post
Zander rolled over and stretched along the length of his king sized bed. The sun was peeking through the curtains, coaxing him to get up and start the day, but he was resisting for as long as he could. For the past twelve years he had been getting out of bed and rushing off to the office, but no more. Instead, he now had his days free. Free to stretch out in bed and watch the sun creep up the wall of his high-rise suite.
It had been a hard decision. It always was when you loosened the reigns on a multi-billion dollar company because...what, he was feeling some urge to rebel like he never had as teen? Or was it because he felt stupid that it had taken him this long to figure out why his blond hair and blue eyes never fit in with the dark haired and eyed clan he called family? He was still trying to reason it out in his own head. All he knew was that the weight was lifted off his shoulders for the first time since the brochure for Harvard had been shoved into his hands at seventeen.
The new chapter of his life began with a photograph.
He reached along his bedside table, plucking the photo up. Two babies were staring back at the camera, opposites in their appearance. One was light haired and cheery, the other was reserved and had dark hair. The dark haired babe even looked bigger than the one with light hair. He wouldn’t have believed they were twins, but it was scrawled along the back of the photo. “Fraternal” was the key word. It explained why they weren’t the same, and it would make finding him all that much harder.
He didn’t know the dark haired boy’s name, what he now looked like or where he was, but he was determined to find him. After thirty years of just having high maintenance sisters, he really could use a brother.
