00V. description Penelope almost always has a dimpled smile on her face and always walks with a bounce. She loves to wear bright colours and patterns that boost her mood. She also prefers girly fashions and wears frills and lace a lot, and favours baby-doll style clothing. Penelope wears a lot of light dresses and skirts with ballet flats in the summer, and lacy tops over skinny jeans or leggings with converse sneakers or brown lace-up boots when the weather gets colder. She usually wears her hair down and lightly curled and her make-up, while full face, is low-key and soft.
00I. overall personality Penelope is usually a sweet, happy-go-lucky girl, but she can be feisty and snappy when she wants to. She loves to be the care-free flower-child girl most people see her as. She's a real tree-hugger, having been instilled with a love of nature by her parents, and cemented in science class. She will be the first one tell you that she's a socialist and will talk about her values and views on most things. She loves animals and has a cat named Cyrano she brought when she moved back to New York from Toronto for her second year of university. If she's not playing with Cyrano, or espousing some social cause or another, or at work, then she's usually snuggled up in her little sofa with an Agatha Christie novel, or works by other mystery novelists, mystery being her favourite genre. Penelope can read for several hours, if she likes the book enough, and often loses track of her surroundings completely. Sometimes she might not even hear the phone ring.
While kind and fun-loving, Penelope can also be thoughtless at times, not noticing when a person is having trouble, or that something has gone wrong around her. In the same way, she sometimes lets issues go right over her head, because she isn't capable of - or just doesn't like - dealing with the stress they bring. She'd rather be ignorant of it then be emotionally bothered by it. It's why she so fully espouses environmental and social causes. Most of them are distant enough from her social sphere that it doesn't affect her directly, so she can involve herself in solving problems and avoid the strong emotional links that bring her so much stress. And when she shares her views with others, it can come off like she's on a soapbox with her political ideologies, though usually she doesn't realize it when she gets really pushy about her politics.
0II. strengths Penelope is sweet and kind, really believes in the ideals she espouses, always tries to see the best in people and bring it out in them, and always tries to make people happy.
III. weaknesses She's flighty, doesn't do well under stressful situations, and can be didactic at times.
0IV. goals Penelope hopes to open her own nursery someday, though right now shes content saving up her money working at the Botanical Gardens.
00I. notable family & friends Penelope is an only child, but she's very close to her parents, Ellen and Marcus LaFontaine. She's also dating the enigmatic Hector Tormei, who's nearly twice her age, making discretion necessary - for now.
0II. overall history Penelope was born in Toronto to Ellen and Marcus LaFontaine. Ellen worked as a high school biology teacher and Marcus was a conservationist, so Penny was exposed to nature from a young age. As an only child she had her parents undivided attention constantly, and they spoiled her with presents when she was small, but still disciplined her when she needed it. She loved to play outdoors as a child and would frolic in her backyard in almost any weather. She grew to love science and biology, like her mother, and longed to learn everything she could about the plants and animals her father spent his time saving.
By the time she reached high school, Penelope longed to open her own plant nursery to cultivate endangered plant species to re-introduce them into the wild. She made it on the school honour roll every year and got a scholarship to study environmental science at NYU. Though she was sad to leave her home, she was also excited to see a new city and pursue her goals. She quickly grew to love New York city and the people she met in her dormitory and shared a condo with later on. She graduated at the top of her class, and was offered a job at the Botanical Gardens. Though she initially intended to go back home, Penelope accepted the offer so that she could start saving up money to open the nursery she always wanted to have. She's been been working there for 3 years now, and the savings are steadily growing, and Penelope is getting steadily closer to her goal.
III. sample postPenelope ran her fingers though the large pot of soil that was to be used to refresh the rose bushes. The soil had been a donation form a local nursery and she wanted to be completely sure that soil was healthy and nothing was contaminating it. She wriggled her fingers through particles, feeling for anything that shouldn't be there, and to see that it was loose but moist, so that the flowers would be able to absorb enough water and nutrients to remain healthy
Just as she was about to finish up, the lab manager, Henry, walked in brusquely and asked, "So is the soil good to go? We need to keep those roses happy and healthy, or things won't be looking too pretty."
Penelope sighed and nodded at Henry, a smile on her face the entire time. "Yes, yes." She replied, "The soil's ready, so there's no need to panic. The roses won't be deprived of their home for long." Penelope preferred to stay calm and take everything in stride, rather then rush around madly, like Henry, and she told him that regularly.
