00V. description James carries himself with poise and confidence; at no time does he ever present vulnerability in his posture. Always a sharp dresser, James only wears the most expensive and well cut suits that compliment his body.
00I. overall personality James is one of the few people in the world with too many layers to count. Even the people closest to him haven't seen every side of him, something he counts on to keep himself safe. James is generally egocentric, thinking only of what would benefit him best. He is a greedy man, wanting money and comfort before more than human company. That's not to say that he won't occasionally indulge in the pleasure of interacting with people of the female variety. James was quite fond of women and the company they could keep but had no interest in ever settling down. He was content being an eternal bachelor. Despite this fact, James has a very easy time talking to women and wooing them. Being quite a fan of the chase, James has been known to charm and court several women and then dump them the moment that he got bored, which happened quickly. The man tended to be fickle in many regards, not just with women. More often than not, he'd take up a hobby only to stop after a fortnight or so. The only two ventures that were able to hold his attention were his work and whenever he planned 'spontaneous pecuniary gain'. Both situations lead to James's immediate acquisition of more money, merely to satisfy his avarice. Ever since his childhood, James has had a fascination for money and the power it signifies. While he has no real use so millions of dollars, James enjoys the process of acquiring it through illegal means. It is the act of stealing money, the art of the crime, that draws James to the criminal activity because every dollar he steals is another ounce of power and control that he holds over law enforcement and the common man.
James is sociopathic, he's developed his own moral code. While he abides by common law the majority of the time, James's own set of standards varies drastically. There is no right or wrong to his mind, simply surviving, overwhelming, and following. Every action is justified if it is to survive a conflict, overwhelm others and get into power, or to break the mold and cease being a follower. He operates under Darwin's survival of the survival of the fittest ideal but he doesn't let it interrupt his position in society. James is an expert at putting on airs and hiding his true personality which is generally ruthless in his pursuit of power.
Having a persona that he displays to the public, Edwards, and having a criminal side, Moriarty, has taken its toll on James. He's developed a split personality of sorts. Around normal people, James is the Edwards character who is still egomaniacal and narcissistic, but is also a more caring, affable person. As Edwards, James is capable of love and is prone to developing connections to other people. However, when Moriarty takes control again, he tries to cut off the connections as to protect himself. This ability to detach from the criminal world, however, is one of the reasons why James has been so successful. When he needs to lay low, he simply switched on the Edwards personality long term. When living as Edwards, he still reverted back into Moriarty when no one was looking, laying out plans and being a general asshole. In the more recent years, the ability to keep these two characters seperate has become difficult and James has found that, in the absence of challenge, he has started to hold onto the Edwards personality more often. As a result, the Moriarty aspect has become more bombastic and erratic, making him a figure to be feared while the Edwards character is slowly becoming more cruel.

00I. notable family & friends Edith and Lector Moriarty • Parents • Alive and well in the Caribbean, exact whereabouts unknown ; Sebastian Martin, boyfriend.
0II. overall history As Professor Edwards, James is highly respected. Both his advice and flippant opinion carry a lot of weight. As Moriarty, or M, he is both feared and respected.
History: Son of a lawyer and pharmacist, James was born into a life of luxury. Being the only son, he was given everything he could have wanted. This amounted to his own library, a chemistry set, and a set of dental tools that 11 year old James used to pick locks. That was the age at which he discovered his love for usurping authorities. With malicious glee he found the rush of outwitting the best and brightest officers day in and day out addicting. To heighten his pleasure of lording over adults, he was declared the most gifted student in his school and was graduated early. He began attending a university at age 13, carefully balancing his studies, his less than legal hobby, and the appropriate social appearances. The young man became a novelty in Hampshire until he set off to New York at 15 to attend NYU. There he received all of his Ph D's and has been teaching since age 24.
James didn't truly become the criminal mastermind that he is until right around the same time. After moving to New York, James was unsatisfied with the allowance from his parents (which was quite sizable). He wanted a penthouse rather than a studio apartment, as well as finer clothes and money to spend on the luxuries that he enjoyed then. Things like sports cars and obscenely expensive watches were bought with money that James made from fencing goods that he stole from apartments and local businesses. Because of his extremely high intelligence, James grew tired of simple burglary and began to challenge himself by stealing while people were present. Again, the thrill left the endeavor and turned to planning high risk heights. James targeted museums and private collections, lifting priceless pieces and then selling them on the black market. At the same time, he began to plan crimes for others to execute. This marked the emergence of Moriarty, the name he adopted for his illegal pursuits. Moriarty, or M, began as a blackmail specialist until he had enough men under his influence. Once he was content with the number of 'employees', James staged a complex bank robbery. It involved the destruction of a bridge and a ransom not which distracted the police long enough for M's associates to make off with almost five million dollars. James received the majority of the payoff, the men who committed the crime were glad to be alive. The event was known as the Bank Robbery of 1991, committed when James was merely 25.
Since then, James has worked as both mastermind and Professor, playing both sides of the fence. Along the way, he has accumulated many lovers but no serious relationships and has more than one feud with some detectives. Now that he has been as it for a long while, James is starting to challenge himself again by planning simultaneous, international heists and even assassinations. In the most recent months James has involved himself in a relationship (sex only) and has finally branched out into murder.
III. sample postFunny things, people. Milling about like drones, never once minding the bigger picture that they unwittingly played a part in. James watched from the bistro's window, counting the number of people who passed by, their eyes trained on their smart phones. Slaves to their work, slaves to the law. Slaves to him, they just didn't know it yet. They had no idea the power he had over their insignificant lives. A simple phone call and he'd have their life savings. Everything they struggled for, gone in less than a minute. James watched a young couple pass, coddling a baby and laughing, and allowed himself a smile. And yet, among the fray, they found themselves happiness or what could pass as it.
James wondered what happiness felt like.
He'd never felt in, not once in his life. He's felt thrill, adrenaline, boredom, anger, and a myriad of other emotions, each one fast and fierce. But never happiness. Perhaps it was because he had never slowed long enough to allow himself the comfort. James was always pushing forward, hunting the newest challenge, finding the upper-hand every moment. It would be nice to try it sometime, happiness.
But then he'd have to give up his love of puzzles, the puzzles of humanity and the price of putting together the puzzle too fast or not fast enough. The chance of being caught, of killed (the tight scar on his leg was proof enough of the threat) was what motivated him, James wasn't foolish enough to deny it. By winning each daring heist, he beat fate, the devil, and the cunning minds hired to protect the people. He won, each and every time, overpowering death and avoiding consequence.
It made him a God.
