James Stanton Moriarty
"Limitless Potential"
OOC: I'm Kay, I turn 21 in August, and I've been roleplaying on RC for a few years now.
Canon: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes
Face-claim: Hugh Jackman
Social Status: High Class. James is in the very lucrative business of crime planning so he is well to do.
Occupation: Officially, he is a philosophy professor at NYU, but unofficially he plans crimes for other people to execute.
Age: 38
Appearance: James dressed like one would expect a college professor to dress: many slacks and khakis, sweaters, and some button down shirts. Nothing overly formal on a day to day basis, but he didn't really dress casually. Casual for James is a khaki pants and a polo-shirt. He keeps his hair cut rather short so he wouldn't have to waste time styling it, but he is very clean. James' nails are always well manicured and his teeth are in impeccable condition. He carries himself confidently, his shoulders squared and his back straight while he does pretty much anything.
James' accent is definitely hard to place, because really it's a conglomeration of accents. When James is speaking normally, his accent is mostly English, though his inflection is a bit odd. When angry, his accent becomes more slightly more Swedish.
Overall Personality: James isn't particularly loud or flashy. He firmly believes that the true measure of a man is in his mind and soul, both of which you can't show off in some extravagant way. James is well-spoken and calculated in how he addresses people because he knows that having many friendly acquaintances is a benefit in life so he tries his best to maintain a relatively large social circle so he always has someone to call on when he needs aid, even though that doesn't happen often. James is a careful man, he never takes unnecessary risks and will often create backup plans for when his original plan doesn't turn out like he wanted to (which also rarely happens). It's nearly impossible to get James to rush into a situation impulsively or without careful preparation. Spontaneity isn't James's strong suit and it never will be.
Like one would expect from a college professor, James is almost frighteningly intelligent. He is naturally gifted at planning and problem solving, and he takes joy in creating or undoing very complex problems. He almost always has a crossword puzzle on his person so he has something to do if his current situation bores him. Because of these amazing abilities, James found that teaching was underwhelming intellectually and created a second, very fruitful business: crime planning. Even though he very seldom executes a crime, James is responsible for planning many of the most perplexing cases which show off his intellect beautifully.
Borrowing a page from Ben Franklin's book, James goes through great efforts to appear to be very humble though he is quite the opposite. James is fully aware of how extraordinary his mind is and, if presented with an anonymous setting, will openly brag or boast about it. In any other setting though, James will often just smile softly and be polite, almost overly so. He doesn't want to draw attention to himself unless he knows, beyond a doubt, that he won't be caught or linked to anything that's happened; because he's so cautious about how he lives, he doesn't even let himself the opportunity to be the center attention in his daily life. Only when he's hidden behind electronic communication does he become Moriarty.

Overall History: James' family traveled a lot while he was growing up. His father was constantly moving because of military assignment so James and his mother moved with him since James' parents couldn't stand being apart. This meant that James was always in a new school or a new country and had to adapt quickly. As a result, James spoke three languages fluently growing up: English, Swedish, and Welsh. His accent as an adult is a strange mash of all three, plus hints of other places where he's spent more than a year in, such as Scotland and South Africa. James was lucky enough to excel at school and language learning so the continual movement never hurt his educational growth. He still graduated from school far faster than other children his age and was entering university when he was 12.
At college, attending Yale, James was guilty of overclocking and would often take almost 30 hours a semester, double the recommended load. Because of this overly diligent approach, James breezed through several bachelor degrees before moving on to getting Master degrees and eventually PhD's in military history, chemistry, and philosophy. James bounced around between careers after getting his degrees, being only 25, and tried out several options including novelist, bank manager, and restaurant owner before returning to school, only this time to teach. James decided to settle in New York because he liked the constant movement and energy the city had, not to mention it was the perfect place to start experimenting with crime consulting.
James wasn't a rule breaker, and he's never personally broken a law in his life. However, on a regular basis James gives counsel and advice on how to pull of perfect crimes, for a cut of course. He guarantees criminals that they won't get caught and he gets 10% of whatever their profit is. On occasions where his clients tried to stiff him, he'd call in an IOU that he would have collected from someone in a long-burn crime, and have them collect money on his behalf. James never personally interacts with clients and is a perfect image of anonymity.
Most Influential Event: When he planned out his first crime. It was for a class as a project and James, curious if it would work, sought out someone to try it for him. When it did, he realized that he could live a second life as a criminal mastermind, and he did as such.
Sample Writing:
James listened to the rustle of papers as his students took their mid-term while he paced the isles, checking to make sure no one was cheating. No one ever was, because they were good people generally, but he had to make sure. Another set of rounds done, James returned to his desk so he could update the time left on the board and saw that his secondary phone, the anonymous one, had a text waiting. James wrote "20 minutes remaining" on the board, nice and big, and announced the same before checking the message.
--Diamond in transport. ETA 12 minutes.
James scoffed quietly, deleting the text instantly. He told them he didn't want any updates until they were handing over his cut. James had no need for information beyond the success of the crime because he knew that even if they were caught, he'd be impossible to link to the crime. James sat the phone back down and looked up just in time to see a student approaching him with a completed test. James took the papers with a smile and a nod.
"Have a good day, Tanner," He said softly.
